Ron McCarthy from the Quad Cities lands the job.

Rex made the formal announcement today:

"Ron’s experience and proven leadership skills will prove to be invaluable assets for our listeners, our staff and our advertisers.  We’re fortunate that he has chosen to join our Springfield organization.”

Rex isn't too creative in his news releases.  Here's what he said about David Sage who lasted only months.

David’s skills, business experience and customer-focused approach will prove to be invaluable assets for our listeners, our staff and our advertisers.  We’re fortunate that he has chosen to join our organization.”

There was good advice from Morris when Sage was hired last June"  "Rent, don't buy." Maybe Ron should receive the same message.

I know one client who left over Journal's sloppy (and I do mean sloppy) handlng of his account.  The screwups and ball dropping over there were unacceptable to said client, who took his ad dollars to a local TV station and got a cheaper and more effective advertising package.  (Yes it was cheaper to advertise on a local TV station than even KSGF!!!)

I can tell you this client I am speaking of had to call Hansen directly to get anything done, and wasn't amused that it took nearly 3 months to get his problem fixed.

And to quote the owner of said business:  "[These screwups] wouldn't have happened on Curt Brown's watch"

Exactly how many sales managers did you go through in 30+ years at KTTS, XGM?  (I'm asking because I suspect its a rather low number)

Given the current state of the economy, and the state of the radio industry nationally, being a sales manager of a cluster like Journal's would have to be a high-pressure job.

The demands for success would have to be very high.  I hope the salary/commission package is good, because it's going to be a BIG job.

As XGM is fond of saying, you've got to superserve the customer.  In this case, the advertiser.   You've got to make sure his/her needs are met, and that his advertising gets results.  If not, they'll take their money elsewhere.

My two cents,

Art

Question, how do you feel ? Do you root for your "ex" to fail. Do you cheer when they screw up or do you feel damn if I was still there this bleep would'nt be happening. A certain sense of sorrow knowing like the '72 Dolphins nobody is really going to remember the glory days exept old timers, and then marginalized by a new generation ( they had less compitition ect ) I ask this because I used to feel mixed emotions about my ex, it has to be 10,000 times more of a bleep because KTTS is the mighty KTTS.  I mean radio people tend to be possesive and emotional. Would it be worse if they was sooooo good people are saying glad the previous guy is gone. It took me 3 years to make peace with my junk. Do old ranch hands sit around and mourn the old times ? Do they compete with each other like old classmates to see who survived and thrived the best ? I saw Wayne Glenn on tv hawking his book the other day... XGM YOU SHOULD WRITE A BOOK !!!!! I bet it would be a great read.

I must admit I have mixed emotions.  On the one hand, glad that folks, including ex-listeners, and former employees say good things about when I was there.  On the other hand, I don't want them to fail. I used an analogy with Rex when I was retiring and he was taking over....I said, if he had a daughter (he doesn't), but if he did and he, the father was walking her down the isle at her wedding, the thought he would be thinking would be "I hope this guy OK and will treat my daughter great".  Just like the father, I had years of my time devoted to "raising" this kid (KTTS in my case), and I sure don't want anything bad to happen to her.  I told Rex, I was hoping he would be good for the station.

Many things have changed since those days, but some remain....aka good news coverage, good personalities for the most part, still the best Radio weather, etc. When it comes to something changing I don't agree with, I say "hey, it's their money, they can do what they want".

One thing I think they have really dropped the ball on is...promotion! They do very little compared to when we were there.  I mean promotion, not on their own air.

You are right, I can't remember her name either. She had great Newspaper Experience and seemed the best of the candidates avail at that time.  I knew I would have to teach her all about Radio.  But then, it's not rocket science.  Well, the day she came to work, is the same day I decided to retire at the end of the year. Needless to say, I did'nt teach her about Radio or anything else.  After I left, I understand she failed miserably.  Sorry I wasn't there to fullfill my promise to her.

That makes 5 total.

Chapter one you can explain the KTTS Ranch concept of full service radio, not "just a country music station" Next chapter can be on the many great ranch hands and behinds the scenes folks, Chapter 3 the tragic end of Tela-booka-looka ( joking) Chapter four theories and concepts and changing times. Include alot of photos, clear up myths, maybe get former ranch hands to pitch in. Create a true document that captures a time and place in the Ozarks. At one time I had the vain idea of creating a book on the AM 1060 volunteers, since I was one for 2 years, but  A. I don't think enough people would give a rats backside to make it worthwhile B. It would take an outsider to do it since every volunteer on air and off would have a completly different story and point of view. Only one former volunteer I can think of was close enough to Ron, beloved by all and was both a Bennett  and College street era guy to try it.  Point is  a KTTS document could be akin to the Ice storm book, one of Wayne Glenn's books, Big Smith Cd's and maybe years down the road some media student...

Sounds like an intersting idea.  There's lot's of history there with some pretty colorful characters.  Who's a likely candidate??  How about you, XGM??

Re: old Ranch Hands sitting around moaning about the good ole days.

I can't speak for other ranch hands but I don't sit around and mope. I do spend a lot of time thinking about what a fun job it was. I've been made to more appreciate Great Empire Broadcasting, the great job Curt Brown,Don Paul and others of managment did. I also had great co workers including some of the current team such as Don Louzader.  Do I miss radio? Not really, however I have to say sometimes when I hear a Marty Robbins or Merle Haggard song on the radio I have this twing of sadness that sweeps over me. Mostly because I realize that I probably won't share another song ( over the air waves) with the people who still love that kind of music). I  realize that is a closed chapter in my life. I have new chapters now which I enjoy very much. Besides...you would be amazed to know how much  time I spend listening to tapes, cds, 33 and a third albums of the Classic Country stars. It makes me proud that I had the good fortune to spend over 30 years worth of workdays being around that  great music. I have to admit that sometimes when I'm listening to one of those old songs, and there is no one around, from time to time I still ocassionaly extro a few of those songs . "Classic Country AM 1260, That was Marty Robbins........ "Maybe I do miss it more than I thought.     Rabbit

The last dude lasted only a few days.  It's cheaper to promote this woman.  It's also easer to demote her at the end of the year when the numbers are off.  Yup! It all adds up!

It would appear to be CYB by Mr. Hansen.
