My wife and I are mid-50 boomers who like music but abhor the lemming-like approach taken by most stations. KTXR's new format is a winner with us, and besides talk radio, is our most listened to music station.
It fills a void in the market, and is very close to being a smooth jazz station. The signal is strong, with great sound quality.
My only suggestion to improve it would be to play more jazzy R&B at night, and jazz/ blues on Sunday mornings.
As is typical for my wife and me, whenever we have liked a particular station in the past, i.e., Aurora's short-lived smooth jazz experiment, it would soon fade into the abyss, to be replaced by a format that held no interest for us.
I hope KTXR is fine tuned and honed into a format with staying power.
BTW, besides 101.3, why is it that the best signals in Spfld are those with country formats? Bass Country, KTTS, and Wolf all sound great. 104.7 and 97.3 sound tepid, by comparison.
What the music lovers here need, is for College of Ozark's 91.7 to somehow get their signal into Spfld. That station, despite the green jocks, plays a great mix of music. I realize it's not commercial, but it's pretty good college radio.

Gotta agree, anything outside the standard run of the mill cookie cutter corporate format is welcome to my ear.
US 97 should have one of the better signals if the 100,000 watts is firing on on cylinders. Isn't KTTS, KTXR and KXUS the only maximum wattage FM signals in Springfield.
At one time the College of the Ozarks radio signal was strong enough to reach Springfield even up to around Bolivar/Humansville. But for some reason the Bobcat broadcasters (administrators) and the Bears hierarchy for KSMU worked out some sort of joint programming agreement and the station at Point Lookout drastically cut power. KSOZ Point Lookout was one the first FM signals in the Ozarks and it is a shame that they traded off that great signal.

I believe there's a lot more to FM sound quality than simply pushing out 100k watts. I imagine the great sound of our three country stations is the result of knowledgable engineers knowing which knobs to turn and buttons to push on the transmitter.
Whatever the reason, KTXR and three twangers sound a lot better than the rockers in Springfield.
Yeah, I remember when KCOZ's signal reached this far north, and wish that were once again the case. I imagine KSMU didn't want competition from a college station playing music that appealed to everyone except thier donors with fat wallets.
BTW, classical is OK, but most college towns have at least two public stations that offer jazz/blues/AAA, and classical music and NPR talk.
What would it take for KCOZ to install a translator and serve the Springfield market?

| Not trying to be a contrarian, just curious - how does the Timeless Love Songs format on KTXR fill a void in the market? Seems to me it's covering a shockingly-similar amount of territory as 1060/99.9's Music Of Your Life.

And Smooth Jazz on KTXR-HD is much better than Timeless Love songs.

RE: Your comment that KTXR is as bad as the geriatric, sleep inducing tunes and talk on 1060/99.9.
Luther Vandross and Steely Dan on KTXR can hardly be compared to the old fogie 1060/99.9 toe tappers.
Check it out.

Bud, why do I get the feeling you’re the consultant that "invented" the Timeless Love Songs format for Jones? I have a feeling you are lurking to see what people say about your creation.

Nothing gets by the Desdinova, the Desdi knows all!
Yes, I am a highly skilled radio professional that is marketing my unique format through this forum., and I will soon rule the radio world.
Actually, I am a mid-50s boomer who worked in radio during my college years, and listens these days to rock, country, blues, jazz, and lots of talk.
Don't knock the new KTXR until you've heard it awhile. Like you, I would much prefer the HD smooth jazz format, but for now I'm pleased to have something new to listen to.

I agree it is not like KBFL AM/FM has a good mix of music some bordering on smooth jazz, also play some light contemporary hits of 70s and 80s mixed in, a good variety of music which is needed in Springfield market.
Of course Wayn Glenn is as good as ever also.

| Finally I got a chance to listen to KTXR for quite a while today and have to say I really enjoyed the music. I am sure it wont appeal to the younger folks aka, rappers, etc. but us old dudes I think will really like it. I would expect to see them do pretty well...maybe 3rd or 4th place in the Arbitron age demo 45+. If they would just promote it (not on their own air) I believe it will do pretty well.

A friend of mine told me that KTXR had dropped NBC news on the hour, is that true? Frankly, I haven't listened that intently, usually just while driving from point A to B. If they have...do they have local in it's place or just "more music"?

Actually, it is CBS News. We dropped the top of the hour, but we run a minute long CBS news update at around ten minutes before the top of the hour.
