I am almost afraid to post just because it depresses the crap out of me when I am the last poster on a topic, I feel like board killer. But I am in a good mood, the public library has reopened and I get to use a computer ( I dont own one ) I have spent the past 2 hours listening to KWTO's morning line.. uh uh um, are we on, uh uh, could you repeat that, the phone was ringing, uh uh, looong throat clear, uh uh  actually the whole thing made me feel like I was sitting in the smokey VFW Hall in Burlington Kansas listening to half drunk old timers, right down to the ultra conservative politics. The callers sounded smarter than the host especially the Central High school parent... Honestly does Springfield HAVE a signature morning school to where you would say to a newcomer, matter of taste, the persons age ect.. Best syndicated morning show.. Mike and Mike on ESPN 1400.

Play GM for a minute....If you were running KWTO-AM or KSGF, what kind of morning show would generate the most listeners?

A lot of interviews?  A lot of phone calls?  How would you manage it?

Have a moderate host, i.e. not right or left wing. The airwaves are FULL of ultra right wing folks and I don't think a solid left winger would go here either, but someone who will listen to BOTH sides of an issue and be prepared to take issue with either side.  Push for lots of phone calls, a few interviews would be OK if they don't discourage callers.  Interviews should be tied in with current news only.  Never cut off a listener, unless they use bad language.  Don't be afraid to speak your piece on political issues, local, state, and national.

What I miss are shows like Don Carpenter used to do on the old Rock 99.  Really fast paced, entertainment-oriented shows.

A few phone calls.  A few funny bits. A little news.  And, lots of yuks.

Really miss that.

Interesting points.  Curt, I have heard you say that before.  Is there a national success that fits that mold?  I can't think of one.

Does anyone remember a Rick Holiday who worked for AM 560 in the 70's

Don't know about a national show who does it and makes it work, maybe not.  I would still do it that way however.

About as close as it comes in syndication to what Curt is describing is Jim Bohannon's show, but even that program has been in decline for a number of years. The number (and quality) of clears has been dropping like a stone. The reason why moderate, listen-to-all-sides talk radio doesn't work is because it's not as biting as the one-sided stuff. Study after study on talk radio listenership in recent years has proven this, and that's why talk radio is now nearly all-politics all the time. The days of non-partisan issues talk are winding down.

As for what to do in morning drive, I'm surprised no one is doing a newswheel-type format. Local and national newscasts, sports, business, light features, 4-5 minute interviews, and a host to serve as mortar to bind it together. Seems to me that's the hole in Springfield talk radio as opposed to finding a host with no political bent.

I understand that we don't have a WLW in this area -- but their morning man (I can't remember his name) is amazing at putting those types of shows together.

You're thinking of Jim Scott. By and large he's doing the newswheel, albeit with expanded interview time. Very rarely does he talk real issues or take phone calls. He's still just the glue between news, sports, traffic, weather, and business.

I listened to Morning Line and KSGF, I clicked back and forth with my remote. No clowning, no punkerary,  when Chuckie is ON and grooving like he was in hour 3 he has cult of personality that buries KSGF's show. KSGF sounds dry, like an access tv public affairs program, HOWEVER I did enjoy some of the square discusssion and the attempt at a more intelectual than emotional approach. The agriculture stuff in hour 2 was dead borring unless you are really into farming. Dr. Ed ( back to KWTO) would sound alot more intelligent if he didn't uh uh uh so much. When he does peal off a sentence it is smart, but the stammering makes him sound like a rube. Honestly if I could play radio dictator, 1260 would be an oldies music station simular to the AM oldies station Springfield had in the 80's I want to say it was called K-Bug. Bright, sunny, fun radio. To me, my humble opinion is the mark of a truly great talk show host is when something happens you can't wait to hear thier take on it, like with Rome when an athelete screws up... War being back on 3rd shift.. out.

What do you guys think of The Dennis Miller Show?

Sometimes he is funny, hip, and right on and sometimes he needs to "dumb it down" so I can understand what he is talking about.

What ? Is Benard Goldberg and that body language chick Tonya not available ? After today I am done with AM talk radio, so much negetivity and gloom. Hillary is satan, it was speaker Newt that gave us all of our prosperity in the 90's, the bank crises is Jimmy freakin Carters fault, payback for his 70's policies. If Obama becomes president we are all having our guns taken  from us and we will be moved into a socialist group home or something like it. Seem like most callers were scarred or angry.  I went to Vermont a couple years ago and thier AM radio is the total oppisite with Air America and the like. YOU ARE ALL CRAZY...

What does Newt and Carter and losing your gun to Obama have to do with best morning shows?

Who does a show here in the ozarks that you can stomach? Shows that are still on the air here in town...in the morning...no dead or retired people...shows that talk, cover events, have fun,are topical, play musictalk sports, whatever.

Is it KTTS? is it Ned and Scott, is it Kevin and Liz or Woody or who? Stay on topic people.

I understand and agree that I am crazy.  But work with me -- does the above mean you do or don't like Dennis Miller?
