DB...I worked there (KGBX) with Chuck and Jerry, Dudley, Ernest (never call me Ernie on the air) DeCamp among others and Barry Bryant came not long before I left for KTTS.  Rick Hoover hired me at KGBX to replace  Fred Switzer when he left for KYTV (tho' I could never fill Fred's shoes he was soooo smoooth).  I signed the station on at 4:58 AM in time to hit NBC News at Five (they later switched to CBS when Stauffer purchased the station fron the News-Leader).  I played DJ from 5 to 6:30 AM when the news block kicked in -  till 8AM.  During the news block I read sponsors and intro ed the news (Ernest, Chuck Shannon, Randy Sissel & Dudley),weather (Ray Nelson), sports (Art Haines), farm markets (Jim Kendrick)and traffic reports (usually from our Mobile unit parked out back).  It was called "The Morning Report"a ninety minute news block...then at 8:05 I played DJ again until 9AM   then worked on the music playlist and did production from nine 'til noon.  Frank Urban was the engineer who switched power for me most of the time but I do recall missing the time to change the directional pattern on some of Frank's days off.  Those were great days and that building on Booneville was special.

Has anyone been in that building latley ? I am sure many things are still there. The NBC logo in the marble and the double window studio,s. I am told that was at the time it was built for TV also. There was a 6 foot 8 guy named syvester I think. I can remember Dudly foot patrol to City hall and the PD. As well as the bells and typing of the teleypes all the way to the front door.

Big Jim Sylvester, he had a big deep voice with a bit of an ozark twang...his dad was a reporter maybe even an editor for the News-Leader.  Jim was the night guy while I was there.  I believe that building was designed with TV in mind and was the first building in the state built specifically for broadcasting.  The NBC logo in the lobby was very cool.  I wonder what happened to the lighted KGBX sign  and music notes that was on the front of the building.  I had totally forgotten how Dudley used to have his regular "walking beat", now that was old school and he always came back with news stories.  Dudley Morris was a classic.  I loved hangin' with Dudley and the old sales dude Homer (can't recall his last name).

I would hope it is because you can pick up KTXR a reasonable distance from Springfield unlike 98.7.  Cardinal games are the only reason I have 101.3 as a preset.  That's valuable real estate as far as I am concerned.  Plus it keeps me from switching stations as I drive around the region.

I know I am biased as a native St. Louisan who worked at Busch Stadium in days gone by, but I don't think you should underestimate the loyalty of Cardinal fans who listen on the radio.  While I admittedly don't know the numbers, it would seem to me that more people who spend more money will be listening to a Cardinal game than to love songs on a given summer evening.

While this area is not as big as STL and is not the home market for the STL Cardinals, I think one only has to look at the switch of the Cardinal broadcast from powerhouse KMOX to weak signaled KTRS.  People in STL were/are outraged.  Not everyone can pick up the game in STL.  A similar switch in Springfield would create a lot of complaints.

Another way of looking at this is this - Cardinal baseball games have saturated coverage throughout Missouri.  I can usually pick up at least two stations (not counting XM) carrying the game as a drive around the state.  Someone's making money even when these stations are overlapping.  Do love songs have that kind of coverage/loyalty/profitability?

To the original comment, it doesn't make sense that KTXR didn't have the STL Cardinal broadcast.  I have to seriously question the decision making/technical competence to get something on the air over at Meyer Com since this is not the first significant local sports non-broadcast in recent weeks.  They did not cover the official announcement of Coach Martin's hiring at MSU either, and this was during their own local show and they are the MSU house organ!?!?.  Of all the local media to not carry it!  It's not like they didn't know it was coming.  Art Haines had all but said he was hired for several days leading up to it.

That's because Mr. M allegedly is not happy with the person selected to lead the Bears.

A week or so ago on the Sports Reporters they had  Chuckie Booms shoveling the negative coal on MSU and the new coach. I thought please, this is the classic ok Ned won't do it, Scott won't do it, Tom "King Ladybear" Ladd won't do it and Art Haines definatly won't do it ... ok Chuckie sic em. Go get em Chuckie, unload your worst Chuckie this is what we are paying you for Chuckie. That is how it sounded to me. You could almost sense in the background some fist shaking was taking place.

I missed Booms piling on Martin personally.  What did he say?  Anything worth repeating or just noise?  I know he chased the "why won't they tell us who the coaching candidates are?" rabbit way too long in the face of reasonable and logical answers to his question.

I had heard that ESPN was at the press conference along with every other media outlet in Springtown.

Even if Mr. M doesn't like the hiring, it is at best petty to not carry the press conference on one of his stations, but I guess he is the one who dropped Mizzou sports for a year after Sen Ken Jacobs of Mizzou...errr Columbia....blocked the SMS/MSU name change, so it is not an unheard of move.  Last time I checked though, the Bears will be playing at JQH Arena, not K?M Arena.  I am guessing that representatives of JQH had some level of influence on the selection.

Personally, Coach Martin looks like a good choice insofar as you can assess a coach that hasn't done anything yet.

Amigo, I didnt really listen that long, it sounded like alot of wailing and stupidity, So I cant give you details. But it sounded alot like what you already described. Honestly outside of Jim Rome I never really listen to Meyer stations. And I wish Van Smack was on a station that appreciated him, like 610 in KC does. In fact I think every Meyer employee should have a little rug , get on thier knees once a day, face west and thank the radio gods that they get to be an affilliate, and behead any program director who would bump the show for any reason including Springfield Cardinals baseball.  Ok just being funny folks... I credit Meyer for this.. they are Springfields most local stations. For example would Wayne Glenn survive a  Clear Channel or Cumulus corporate takeover ? Corporate thugs would strip all of them clean, and we would miss them.
