As an infrequent contributor here, I should probably repeat that I am not a radio guy. I am a listener.
That said, I like the Mike format at 93.5 in Osage Beach. Good mix of music (most of the time) with actual news occasionally. Hopefully the automated jukebox is evolving. I like the music mix with actual people on the air. They have an AM counterpart that I believe generates the local content.
On a similar note, I noticed more real live voices on Jack in KC last time I was there a few weeks back.
It would be nice to have something like one of these in Springfield. Any takers? Call it JohnQ FM maybe? Or possibly the Lyon?

| Alice is very different than Mike in Osage Beach. It reaches Jeff City, where I live, and to be honest, of all my presets, Mike is the one I listen to the most. There's only so much hard rock I can stomach, only so much Delilah I can tolerate and only so much Skynyrd I can metabolize. That being said, Mike is probably my favorite station in mid mo. HOWEVER - my listening habits are not typical... I tune in to the radio about 1 or 2 hours a week at the most. And, even at that very low TSL, I am constantly noticing how SMALL and TINY their playlist is. Kinda sad if you think about it... a station boasting "the 80s, 90s... and whatever we want..." should have a much deeper well from which to draw, but they don't. In comparison to Alice, Mike seems to play less classic rock, more 70s pop, and more 80s alt/pop. (Tears for Fears, The Fixx, etc.) I'm not sure, but it seems to me Alice leans more toward a classic rock direction.

I can only handle so much Alice. It is a local preset but not one I listen to a lot. The music is generally ok, but I don't care for the non-music stuff they do. I really can't deal with Kevin and Liz.
Rick - I guess I go through the area sporadically enough not to notice Mike's limited playlist. I agree that they have a rich range of music to mine and could really have something if they expanded their list. Would that be a budget issue? Do radio stations pay for each song they play?

Typically, stations will hire a PD to handle the music needs of a station. However, that changes when you get down to small markets. I don't know if The Lake is a small enough market to hire a PD or to purchase a music service. Really, in this day and age, if a station can get their hands on high enough quality MP3s, they can rock on forever and not need a service - saving them lots of dough. Add Selector to the mix and anyone can program a station. Well, anyone with half a brain. (I've seen several folks "wash out" while attempting to learn Selector)
It's been a long time since I worked at a station that wasn't part of a very large company. Very large companies leave little to chance. They hire PDs they trust, keep the ones they like and constantly fight the battle of "Hero PDs" who think they're going to re-invent the wheel. Small playlists are the manifestation of that battle.
So, small market: chances are they're buying a programming service.
Medium market: chances are they have a PD - not for each station; usually a PD in a mid-market is responsible for two or even three stations.
Major market: I have no idea since I'm Rick the Hick from the Sticks. (Nickname given to me by Gary Barnes, a large black kid i met on my first day of college)

The PD is Dennis Klautzer, co-owner of KRMS/KMYK. Dennis is a production god and has a great set of pipes. He was a jock on KHTR 103 in St. Louis throughout the 80s until the station became KLOU. He's also worked for KMOX, KXOK, and others. He's been my mentor for quite some time and is a great guy to work for.
As for a library KRMS has almost EVERY TM Century (rock) Hitdisc/Golddisc the company has made since the mid 80s. Dennis was nice enough to let me copy a few. I think the Pop stuff came from Jones. I don't think Dennis uses Selector, but a similar software.
I will say that KRMS has some neat toys. Every kind of production software you've dreamed of and great consoles and processors.

KHTR - Now you're talking. That is what I grew up with (along with KSHE)
This journey may have come full circle. Would Dennis happen to have a copy of the KHTR remix of The Heat is On with 1985 Cardinals highlights in it? That is what I was looking for when I found this board. I have not actually contacted KMOX at this point.

| I'm sure he does. He produced it. Does Dennis "Casey Van Allen" Klautzer ring a bell?

Vaguely. It's been a few naps since then.
That's cool that he is the one that produced it. I would have to say he had good access to the source material. I heard a fuzzy, stick your tape recorder next to the radio version of it (complete with a few notes of the song right after it and part of a promo) a while back that prompted me to want to find a clean copy. "Make it....11" "Here comes Ozzie" "Where do you think Willie is going to put that MVP trophy?" "Tommy Herr hits a two run homer...The Cardinals pull off another miracle"
"Go crazy folks! Go crazy!"
My apologies for the delay in responding. I don't stop by here often.
