Anybody heard anything regarding the move of KLTI in Macon, MO to 660AM Springfield? Even at 1kW days, on such a low frequency, the signal should be pretty good at least during the day until it goes down to flea power at night.
What would you do with another little AM in Springfield?

You almost have to go off the bird to make a signal like that profitable, given the nighttime constraints (and the fact that it's not an established AM freq). What makes it difficult is that a lot of bases are already covered on FM, including ones that are often the purview of AM.
First off, let's assume that the operator wants to put on a legitimate format (as opposed to going all brokered God/Ethnic/Infomercial.) With a signal like that, we're talking about a pretty big 'if.' Also, you almost have to program to white people (since Springfield is only 2% hispanic, and 3% black) taking pretty much all the ethnic options off the table. So here's my thoughts...
1) ABC's True Oldies Channel. With 105.1 skewing younger, there's room here to grab some ears and at least break even.
2) Smooth Jazz. Sure, KTXR is running JRN Smooth Jazz on their HD-2, but there's a negligible number of HD radios floating around. We are talking AM here, but if a poor-signal AM in Cincinnati [a city with far more competitors] can toss it on and keep the lights on, so can 660's ownership.
3) CNN Headline News for Radio. Jackson MS has this, and it sounds great. Here in Houston TX a 250w daytimer is doing it. Understand this won't be a ratings powerhouse, but you can pull some dollars - especially considering All-News is the only format Miller-Kaplan puts above a 2-to-1 power ratio right now. At a time when the others in town are scaling back news, this can get you at least a little attention.

It's hard for me to believe that Phillip Chirillo of bestbroadcastgroup.com is doing this just because he wants a 1,000watt day/25 watt night signal in Springfield.
This construction permit has been on the books for a while. Has there been any construction in west Springfield, where his proposed tower is located?
My guess is that he either has a buyer, or is actively seeking one. If there's already a buyer, it's probably a religious group. However, the delay in building the facility doesn't seem consistent with most religious groups, who have money ready to spend.
Has anyone heard any other rumors regarding this facility? By now, there should be some construction underway. A two-tower directional isn't cheap, and building it in the city limits of Springfield (with it's restrictive zoning) would be hard to keep quiet.

I seriously doubt Chirillo intends to operate the station when/if it's moved to Springfield. Looks like he's just doing the exact same thing he did with 97.3 in Moberly (get the CP and sell) and of course that's now Kansas City's 97.3.
It's just a whole helluva lot harder to sell someone on a directional AM with nighttime signal constraints in market 140 vs. a 100kw full-market FM in market 29.

I agree with Will. Best isn't likely to hold onto the station once it moves to Springfield. When I get a little more time, I'll have to look at the application to see who prepared it. The move of KCSX 97.3 from Moberly to Lee's Summit was actually a First Broadcasting creation. First is a classic pump and dump operator. They bought the station as soon as it was able to move and had a buyer for it in the crib.
By the way, KLTI's website indicates it's now simulcasting on the translator at 92.5 in Macon that apparently relayed KRLI previously.

Phil Chirillo & Dale Palmer's KFMZ-AM in Brookfield also has a CP for a significant upgrade in power from 500 Watts to 5kW, and move from 1470 to 1210 AM, which would put a good daytime signal into the Missouri side of the Kansas City area.

I'm sure it will never happen but I would love to hear music back on AM, a high energy "oldies" format with lots of audio processing and constant echo/re verb complete with well produced 20/20 newscast.
Or maybe, a full service news/music format with a soft top 40/ old MOR music rotation.
Or perhaps, my ole weird radio take on music with the 40's at 4, 50's at 5, 60's @ 6, 70's @ 7, 80's @ 8, 90's @ 9 both AM & PM with maybe smooth jazz in the middle of the day from 10am to 4pm and from 10pm to 4am.

If 660 was available in Springfield the owners of other AMs such as 1060, 1340, and 1400 should have applied for it, day coverage much better night couldn't be any worse.
