Across the country, Oldies stations have abandoned the music of the 50's and 60's.  Many have stopped calling themselves "oldies" stations, preferring to use another logo or just their calls (like KCMO-FM).

In Springfield, KOSP still calls itself "Oldies 105.1", but without the music of the 60's, it just doesn't seem right.

Don't get me wrong. I love the 70's.  I came of age in the 70's, and I know the music of the 70's like the the lines on my face.  But, the music of the 60's was just so much FUN!   Oldies stations had culled out the 400 most fun songs of the decade and played them over and over.

Why aren't we doing that with the 70's?  Pick the 500 or so most fun and uptempo songs, and leave out all the AC and depressing stuff.

Did we throw the baby out with the bathwater?

Try KUKU out of Willow Springs.  Not only do they keep the 50's and 60's, but their AM host, Garry Lee, still throws in the Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash tunes that made the Top 40 charts.  If we're going to do Oldies, let's do what we played THEN!

I love Oldies, but hate Oldies Radio and I despise the 70s even more. Give me Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel any day.

I loathe the 70s personally as well.  If I want to listen to oldies, I don't mind the dips into 1970 or 1971 but the disco era makes me ill. :)  Give me an oldies station with Johnny Rivers or The Animals or even the Beatles.  ;)

I think today "Oldies Radio" comes down to what demo you want to reach.  If it's old to them, then call it oldies.

Oldies is going the way of Big Band and Swing,  It has become such a market that you think would be huge with Baby Boomers coming of age and such, but for some reason the music just doesn't seem to hold true.  Plus the oldies stations are trying to latch on to yet another demographic and decide to dump the music of the 50s and 60s to get the people that loved music in the 70s. I see it in Classic Rock now too, that they are diving into the 80s and I even heard some early 90s stuff slide in everynow and again.

I, too, am loathe to think of the music from the mid to late 70's (note proper use of the word...).

On kind of a sidebar, does anyone elese remember Disco 106?  T'was on 1060 AM, then KBUG, and actually carried the bass pretty well.

Oldies dumped John Stephens so I dumped them. Oldies should keep live jocks and do a News-Weather Sports like they did in the old days. And does Nick Russo do sports anymore? He used to be on KICK AM with chicken man. He was every where every where when Kick was on top.

BULLETIN!

107.5 out of Mountain Home just changed to "Bright" oldies.  It's a pretty big coverage area, at least in the central Ozarks.

News-Weather-Sports as in the "old days" on KOSP?  I was the original PM Drive "live jock" on KOSP, and I don't remember anything like that.  I think Mike Roberts sounds MUCH better in the afternoon, he's really picked things up and brought the PM Drive show into the 21st century.

Nick Russo "does sports" every day, as he is the track coach at Springfield Catholic. KICK-AM hasn't been "on top" for 25+ years.

DB, get yourself an XM Radio.  You can still hear puking "deejays" and Dick Orkin's "Chicken Man" every day.

And you wonder where all the listeners have went ? You wonder why radio  is dying off,Why you can not trust radio for breaking news or weather. If you want to listen to that type music ,DJ get, real time weather , time or temps better go to XM or the Internet. Problem is they are going there. KOSP is dropping in the ratings

What a Cliche ,Oldies is coming to the 21st century LOL what do we call them now futures?

Dusty n hot could write volumes

PS the News-Leader has the best Breaking news period on the Internet to bad we cant get them to go next door in the " old KGBX" building and give live reports on the radio.

KOSP has not been worth a darn since Kellogg and Katy were doing mornings. They were by far the best Springfield ever had on the air. KOSP if I remember had great ratings and was on top of the market. Then it all ended!! Kellogg went to Philadelphia and Katy went to Chicago.

I was in Tulsa over the weekend, and listened to Clear Channel's 'oldies' station.  Used to be "Oldies 106.1" ..   Now, it's "Classic Top-40".    That's their on-air logo.  Their music seemed to be centered around 1973.  I heard Motown from 1965, and I heard John Lennon from 1980.

They were voicetracked on Saturday.  Ho-Hum.  Good music selection.  Imaging was good.  But, no life.  No connection to real-time.

Too bad nobody gets it.

Ozzymandias speaks: Think what DB is trying to say is that oldies stations should sound like Top 40 station's of that era such as KICK: news and sports headlines, more jingles and live, upbeat announcers and echo. Also the music should be upbeat. My problem with KOSP, in the past, was their reliance on what I call "prom music." Too many love songs from 1960 to 64. Way too many Four Seasons songs. I think they have improved by leaps and bounds. I also think their "That 70's Weekend" is better than KGBX "70's Saturday." It actually sounds like the music was selected by someone who remembers the 70's (still waiting on them to slip in the Ramones or Sex Pistols).

You always get guys in the industry who say "We can't do that again?" but they never give you a good answer as to why.

Ozzymandias has spoken!!!
