I heard on this mornings' news that a north side church was going to be selling gas for "just $2.42 a gallon" later today. It made me smile and brought back memories... back in the 70's when gas was well below $1 a gallon...we had a promotion at KTTS selling gas for just 14 cents per gallon. Of course, that was before we made a deal with KGBX to trade our 1400kc, 250 wt. station for their 1260kc. 5,000 wt. station. In promoting our 1400 dial position, we had cars backed up for blocks to get into the gas station we worked with. Also for you "history buffs"... we gave away a brand new house in del Prado estates in SW Springfield. It was valued then at $65,000, I am sure the very same house today would be valued somewhere near $120,000. Another fun thing we did several times...we had "Free Night" at several of the Drive In Theaters...all you needed was one of our KTTS decals on your rear car window. Many times I saw the entire theater packed with all KT member cars. We had lots of fun promoting...another neat deal was on KWTO day at the Ozark Empire Fair, we hired a plane to circle the fair grounds all day with a large KTTS sign flying behind it.
Just thought I would let some of you younger guys know what fun you missed in the past.

I recall living in Tulsa about 1980 when gas started hitting over 1 dollar a gallon .KRMG AM 740 had a promotion with a chain of local gas stations they would sell gas for 30 minutes at 74 cents a gallon when they mentioned a certain gas station at a radom time.
This was good for ratings as people driving around would keep the dial on 740 and if close to the gas station mentioned would make a mad dash to get in line.
By the way KRMG AM was getting ratings over 20% those days wuth a full service AC format.
By the way XGM your companies KVOO 1170 wasn't doing bad either

| You know a good radio station trinket to give away would not be a T-shirt or a bumper sticker, a locking gas cap with a station logo. One of those come to our remote at such as such gas station and get your insert station here locking gas cap. Alot of people I know have bought themselves a locking gas cap including myself. There is actually alot of money and promotions that can be gleened from the gas crises, you can get cardboard cut outs of the Oil Barren CEO's and have the insert call letters dart throw and the listener who hits a miracle shot gets some free gas. Be like the 70's when people would pay money to throw nerf ball bricks at stuff they didnt like on tv.

Reminds me if the friendly radio war we had in Amarillo TX with the other top 40 station KFDA 1440 (later KPUR).
Our station KIXZ had fired a DJ that used the name Perry Mann. He later went to work across town at 1440. This was around 1961 and we had a new release by Barry Mann(not Manilow). We kept promoting it by saying" Barry Mann coming to KIXZ listen at 6pm Monday" We tried to make it sound like we were saying Perry instead of Barry. This was driving the DJ Perry Mann crazy, everyone kept asking him if he was going back to KIXZ. He insisted he knew nothing about it. So at 6pm we played "Who put the bump " BY Barry Mann.
Several famous people got their start at KIXZ and KFDA. Art Bell worked at KFDA while in the airforce, Gary Mac later with KHJ, also the late Chuck Riley, known as Chuck Dann at KIXZ.

Those are cool stories Curt. Unfortunately, 250watt AMs are now placed in closets and forgotten. The same with HDs.
As for the belt buckle, we did something similar at KFLW. During a homecomming parade between Rolla and Waynesville, we had an efigy dummy wearing a KZNN shirt. Kinda funny. That KWTO beltbuckle is currently on eBay. I wonder if it's the same one you guys peed on.

The enemy? That is what is wrong with radio -- The Industry as a whote is getting less than 12 cents out of each advertising dollar and we think the guy accross town is the enemy.

Respect. It appears you never worked in a marke with lots of competition or you wouldn't be mocking the above statement.
You can be friends with the other guys, but they are the competition and you have to treat them as the enemy.
Years ago, it was interesting for me. I shared an apartment with Dan Wadlington when he was at KGBX. I also shared a house with Jim Wise when he was at KWTO.
I was at K-T and always monitored their newcasts closely to see what they had on the air.

Morris....it really doesn't matter what size the market...Newspapers and other types of media are kicking our ass in revenue from big to small. Once we get that turned around we can work on all the other problems you have with radio. Pissing on the competition's belt buckle might makes us feel good -- but it really doesn't help us solve our problems.

Respect...I understand what you are saying and agree that the "other media" are the real enemy. This was just a gimic to have a little fun ( the belt buckle bit).
The real enemy today is Radio its' self...we keep shooting ourselves in the foot, over and over again. Way to much automation, satellite fed programing by jocks who have zero interest in the local market. Too many "juke box" stations with nothing but music to offer...NO local news...NO local up to date weather...NO current temperature...you can't fool the public, they know when they are hearing a bunch of CRAP!
It's like these companies...Mediacom for one...who have no real person to answer the phone. Just today, I had reason to call them while driving...drove 12 miles while pushing 1 for this, two for that...bla bla bla...then only get another recording saying their people were busy, hold the line, then hear another bunch of BS recorded stuff...Meadiacom = Barf!! I rate them FFF for customer service.

| XGM -- well said. As much as I try to stand up for today's radio -- I am afraid that if we started getting 30% of the radio budget -- I am not sure the things you just talked about would change -- we would just try to get a bigger cash flow percentage.

I gotta read this board more often...I'm missing all the fun stuff!
When I programmed KGMY-FM (My Country 100.5) in the mid to late 90's, we knew who the "enemy" was, too. It was ultimately KTTS, but we also took on that little country station at 96.5...Max 965 or something like that. One time, that little station showed up at parking lot of a nightclub where WE were doing a concert. The Sales Manager was in the van, and was trading My Country t-shirts (which we were giving out) for 2 Max t-shirts! I told the club owner what was going on in his parking lot, and he asked the other station to leave his property. The Max guys didn't...and I eventually went out there. The Sales Manager guy started yelling at me & shoving me...later, it was reported we got into a fist-fight, but it never got that far. I consider that hand-to-hand combat with the enemy!
When I was in Birmingham in the early 90's, I was at WKXX-FM....a station with NO ratings, and nowhere to go but up. We took on a guerrilia approach with our competition....We would monitor our competition, and whenever they went into one of the 5 to 6 minute stopsets, we'd fire off a pre-produced liner that mentioned them BY NAME, complained that they play too many commercials, and invite listeners to switch over to see if they were playing commericials...which they were. We had lots of fun making fun of our competition, and making fun of all the other stations in the market. We'd call them live on the air and ask for money, since we thought they might have some extra.....
Nowadays, the former "enemy" is broadcasting in the studio right next to you, and you share a production room and a bathroom! Or...the enemy is broadcasting from a studio outside Washington DC, and doesn't play any commercials....or the "enemy" is a website...or an internet radio station.
I don't think there are the "enemies" there once was...mostly because local radio has WAAY more competitors that in did 10 & 20 years ago.

Doug, I'm sure you could've taken him!!
I recently saw an ad for Silver Dollar City's Bluegrass n BBQ in the News-Leader and happened to notice a sponsor for the event. Sirius Satellite Radio. Is that what we have worry about nowadays?
