I didn't know if I should post this in the Engineering, Television, or Radio section of the forum, so Radio it is:
Please take note of the passing of 'Bucky', the
"radio engineer" on 'WKRP in Cincinnati'; he died of a heart attack earlier this month at age 66.  Bucky (played by Bill Dial) appeared in only two of the show's episodes, and was also one of the writers on WKRP.  The two episodes:  "remote broadcast" & the famous "Thanksgiving Flying Turkey" episode.

WGN showed both of those episodes within the past 2 or 3 weeks.

Dial appeared as an Bucky in "Baseball" and "Holdup"...don't ask me how I know.  He wrote "Turkey's Away" and a few others on WKRP...he also wrote several "Simon and Simon" episodes.  A talent for sure.

"Turkey's Away" was, in my book, in the top five funniest half-hours in the history of television...From Carlson launching his pencil to himself swearing his thoughts of turkey flight, non-stop belly laughs.

In actuality it wasn't unlike the KTTS promo at Smitty's wherein the sales individual inflated balloons with helium, then set them loose on the parking lot with grocery coupons floating away to North Carolina.

A parking lot full of dumbfounded listeners and crying children....

Overall, WKRP never received it's due.  We radio folk loved the show because of it's realism.  We all worked with every character on that show at one time or another.  They went into so many facets of radio, including the dreaded day of the arrival of the Arbitron!  Which of us couldn't relate.  If you weren't in radio, the show didn't mean as much, even though there were many funny episodes.  My favorite had to be the Highway Patrol episode when Johnny and Venus got pickled on the air..Priceless!

I've since found out that most of the cast and writers worked in radio. That is where the realism comes in. I've set in several meetings where things were planed and thought about Mr. Carlson's turkey drop.

I found a cable TV channel that plays WKRP, Mary Tyler Moore and both the Bob Newhart shows at night in prime time.  I think it is the American Life channel or something, it runs mostly religious programming during the day.  I try to remember to tune in when there is not much on worth watching.  It amazes me, what with all the channels available there are very very very few that appeal to me.  I hate paying for cable TV and soooooo many of the channels run info commercial programs and shopping stuff.
