I was having lunch Saturday, May12, at Bootleggers Restaurant in Aurora, when low-and-behold, John Stephens and family walked in.

I spoke to him briefly.  He doesn't know me at all, but we had a nice conversation.  He said he was looking for a gig right now, and really missed being on the air.  I didn't get into what happened to his last job, since we were in public, and in front of his family.

But, John Stephens lives!  And, is apparently looking!

John is truly a good performer and has a style all his own, which is good in my opinion.  He does'nt sound like all the "canned" jocks via satalite feeds.  I remember when I hired him back when.  We had an opening and several wanting the job, all had sent tapes and resumes.  John's uncle, Sam Burke, owner of KIRK in Kirksville, MO at that time called me.  He and I had been friends for several years through serving on the Mo Broadcasters Board together.  He asked me to make sure and listen to John's tape and went on the brag about his nephew...John, who was from Chicago at that time.  I listened and I liked plus he had the blessing of a real pro in the business. He was hired and he worked for us at KT for many years.  I wish him the best at what ever he does.  His "Beloved Bald Headed Manager"

Mmmm...Bootlegger's!  What a great restaurant.   I've eaten there a couple of times.  Always quality food, and great service.

Yes, they do.

Aurora is a truly great place to live, if you like to eat.  We've got Bootleggers AND Richard's HawgWild BBQ!!!!

And, if you like Mexican, we've got 2 really good Mexican places, both cousins of the Reyes Family that own the Acambaro chain.

We've got a new high school, a new police & fire station, and new supercenter under construction, and talk of St. johns building a new hospital here.  It's a great time to live in Aurora.

Aurora is a great small town...Home of the Hound Dawgs and the Drive In is true americana, there are some great shops downtown too.   I recall finding a Frank Sinatra LP that I had been looking for forever at a downtown flea market...LOVE that song(Over and Over) The World We Knew, finally found it in Aurora.

I hate to hear about John Stevens.  I always enjoyed his show.  His style limits the number of stations he is suited to.  Plus, like many of us, his age also eliminates most radio stations as possible employers.   Yes, there is age discrimination in broadcasting, which reminds me to mention the age discrimination law suits filed by several former employees at KCTV-5 in Kansas City...that story was front page news in the KC Star on Saturday.

You cannot beat longevity in Broadcasting If we had a good "Oldies" John would be the perfect fit. I have heard they are losing $$$$ advertisers since John Left I know I several pulling ads on oldies after the stuck it to John. Jerry Higley Barefoot Bob,Chuck Riley,Dave Richman,Hightower Don Paul and I could go on and on were the best of the best. Too bad they do not have a wall of fame for " local talent" that made a difference and makes a difference, Look at Wayne Glen his style of serving the entire airwaves with up to date time and weather, and he talks with a smile and means it. Renee Steele and Mr Edwards are worth alot if you could buy em for what there worth is and sell em at the EGO price they have.

John is a classic and true talent.  I enjoyed my days with him at the old radio ranch.
