Wink Martindale steps out of MOYL and states they've got money troubles.
This begs an interesting question...what does the future hold for the affiliates who have it?

I personally like the music very much, of course that has to do with my age and the fact that I played in a combo during my University and Army years. We played the music of that time...aka music of your life.
Through the years I have noted that most people, if they are honest with you, will prefer the music that was popular when they were age 18 to 25. They may like other music a lot but will usually always prefer the music that relates to those years of their life.
If Music of you Life poops out...KOMC FM 100.1 in Branson plays a good mix that includes some of that style music.

MOYL is an acquired taste. It's been around for a long time. Seems like it used to be taped-distributed service, then became a satellite service.
When Galen Gilbert bought KBFL back in the 90's, at first we tried 70's based AC. Big flop. I mentioned in a conversation one day that if we wanted a format that would REALLY get audience response, we could do adult standards. For ease of operation, we turned to Jones Radio Network, who had just acquired Music of your Life.
From the day we put the format on, the phone started ringing. It's not a mass-appeal format, but the people that like it REALLY like it.
I thought for sure when Mr. Meyer bought KBFL, he'd blow it up, so it wouldn't compete with KTXR. I must say I'm surprised he kept it.

| Chuck Southcott is the person in charge of MOYL. When my former company was consulting the station, money was always the biggest issue. I'm pretty sure the biggest expense of the station was the on-air talent.

It seems that operators have trouble making this format work. They have to understand that their listeners are going to be 60+ for the most part. Which means they need to go after advertisers who want to reach these folks: RV Dealers, Stock Market Folks, Vacation Trip sellers, Retirement condos, top end autos, etc. It is unlikely that say, a downtown nightclub would spend any $'s with them. i.e. use your head in sales.

Does anyone know if Lew Jones is still with Jones Radio Network? He left Jones briefly in the mid-90's to program The Branson Music Network before going back to Denver and Jones Satelite...Lew was great to work for and is a great guy, as are most of the people in this business, except for those occasional BACKSTABBERS... "what they do?" "They smile in your face...all the time the wanna take your place."
I love the old MOR format and wish there were more "music of your life" type stations. With as many signals that are on the dial these days, IT'S A SHAME that more formats are not available to listners. If we had less corporate conglomerations and more widespread ownership I believe that more formats would be represented.

Regarding the music of your life:
I'm sorry to see the program in trouble. I've listened many years to that music. I remember listening to it when it was played back in the early 90's on 1400 radio here in Springfield.I certainly enjoy country music, however, I've been a long time fan of such stars as Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee,Perry Como and all those pop legends. I have an appreciation for many styles of music. I can listen to,and enjoy, Merle Haggard, Ernest Tubb and all those greats and be equally entertained. I even enjoy Pavrotti...you know.. the opra dude. Southern Gospel, bring it on. Love it all !
I'm one of those people who can't get enough of music. My day wouldn't be complete without music. That's one of the reasons I was drawn to radio. I figured if I worked in radio I would hear a lot of great music. These days I always have a tqpe,cd, or even some of the old vinal long play records on to enjoy as I spend the day.
It would be a dull world without MUSIC.

I listen a lot to KOMC-FM out of Branson. It's syndicated but relevant. They have the local news and weather which hang onto because of my blog. I also like to hear the entire CBS hourly newscast at the top. I believe CBS is the superior radio network right now. I have a couple of friends who are perma-stringers for CBS radio.
I've noticed the syndicator has dropped "Timeless classic." Seems they are playing a lot more of the 80's and 90's music.

As much as I want Music Of Your Life to be successful, I must admit I never felt the satellite version was run competitively. The fact that it's pitched as a national radio network (instead of positioned like a local station such as ABC/Dial-Global's formats) turns off a LOT of operators - particularly since that approach keeps the station's call letters from being heard during jock talks. Secondly it just sounds automated. Music is normally pretty solid but has been strange at times (I never understood why MOYL would pound new "standards" recordings that didn't work - Carly Simon's version of "Oh Suzanna" comes to mind.) But the talent has always been the biggest shortfall - it's been criminally uneven. Wink, Peter Marshall, and others from the past like Scott O'Neil were solid, but other jocks such as Deana Martin are horrendus.
In a nutshell MOYL has done a LOT of things wrong and it's starting to catch up with them. I'd love to see the operation healthy but we'll see. Personally I'm a fan of Dial-Global (nee Westwood One's) Adult Standards format. That's the one that aired on 1400 before ESPN too over.
Just a sidebar, Jones doesn't own or operate MOYL but holds the distribution/marketing/ad sales rights. That's the main difference between MOYL and the rest of the JRN formats. MOYL is a separate company.

The format that I always likd best was Westwood One's "AM Only" Chick Watkins was the PD and main host...and he was outstanding! The format hosts all understood the music and the audience, and their presentation was outstanding. They'd tell jokes like, "That's about as fun as seeing Doris Day in a yellow dress..haha!". Some made no sense to me, but I'm not really in their demo.
I'm pretty sure these guys are all still on WW1's "Adult Standards" format - I miss hearing them!
