Published on columbiatribune.com Thursday, November 13, 2008 A former Marshall radio announcer was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in federal prison for attempting to entice a minor for sex through the Internet.
Ethan D. Handel, 29, of Marshall pleaded guilty April 18. He was sentenced Thursday morning by U.S. District Judge Gary Fenner, U.S. Attorney John Wood announced in a news release. Handel was a sports and weather announcer for KMMO radio in Marshall, the news release said.
Handel admitted traveling to Independence on July 15, 2007, to meet with someone he believed was a 14-year-old girl who had communicated with him online, using instant messages. The “girl” was an undercover police officer.
Handel established contact with the correspondent in June and continued the communication for several weeks from his home and work place, Wood’s office said in the news release. He eventually made arrangements to travel to the girl’s home to have sex with her. He was arrested after arriving at an Independence residence.
The case was investigated by the Independence Police Department.
