After Neil Diamond's recent admission that "Sweet Caroline" was inspired by Caroline Kennedy (when she was a child), I listened again to the tune, and was reminded what a finely crafted pop tune it really is.
It ranks right up there with "Rosanna" by Toto and "Maybe I Know" by Leslie Gore (produced by Quincy Jones) as some of the best pop production ever.
I counted at least four hooks in "Sweet Caroline" 1-The organ riff at the beginning. 2- The guitar counterpoint. 3- The lyric "Sweeet Caaroooline" . 4- (and of course) "Bah-Bah-Bah"
What a great pop song.

Ah yes, good times never seemed so good...I think almost everyone likes Sweet Caroline. That song was on the charts during my first radio gig back in Ava, 1969. I know someone who named a daughter Caroline after that song but I also know someone who named twin daughters Jessica and Mellisa after a couple of Allman Brother tunes. Ah yes, Rosanna....and how about Roxanne, Amanda, Sweet Little Shelia and Peggy Sue, lots of songs about the ladies written by smitten men. Not that many songs about men, Leader of the Pack comes to mind but he died Big John don't really count although he died too. But Art, Leslie Gore's Maybe I Know (?), that songs never receives much acclaim. I like it but I like She's A Fool and California Nights by young Leslie better.

"She's a Fool" and "California Nights" would easily qualify as well. It's not the song itself, but the production values that absolutely grab me ears.
Quincy Jones, of course, is probably the best producer that ever worked, with deference of course to Tom Catalano, who I think produced "Sweet Caroline" and most of Neil Diamond's hits on UNI.
And, Tom Dowd (Atlantic Records) is probably the best recording engineer that ever worked.

| I have heard alot about "Sweet Caroline" this weekend. It got me thinking about two of my alltime favorite LP's from around that time. I think Neil Diamond's Tap Root Manuscript is one of my favorite recordings. It is one of the early concept albums where the songs are all inner related or tied together. I listened to it and Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline ALOT back in 1970 when I was in Qui Nhon, Vietnam working at AFVN AM & FM. I think everyone has those certain songs or albums from an era that evoke strong memories. I'd be interested in hearing about the favorites of other posters.

I remember writing to my local station, KGMO, in Cape Girardeau back in 1974, and asking them to give me a copy of the lyrics to "Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me)" from Reunion. A few weeks later, I got a typed letter back from them, with all the lyrics, and a bumper sticker, too! I was SO proud of that letter. I probably still have it somewhere...
There have also been many songs that remind me of different times in my life, and certainly different girls in my life. Being a radio guy, I always had to have "Our Song" - something I could play on the radio so she would know I was thinking of her. I can remember none of the songs, and none of the girls today...but I think most people can relate a certain song with a specific time in their life.
I wonder if it's that way today?

| Doug is exactly right!!....I hear a song start up and within a few seconds I think of where I was and what I was doing when it was popular....If I hear Frankie Valli"s "Oh what a night" I go back to my Cougar convertible crusin' the city listening to the tunes....Radio had personality and personalities then....FUN TIMES!!!
