This video posted on Mark Ramsey's web site had me playing it over and over.  Ramsey leaves the impression radio could do the same again.

This station was a giant, but on the local level, I remember when KTTS had that much influence.  Our news tip hotline was always ringing.  Two calls stand out to me.

1. A man who called to say the Strafford School was on fire and could I call the Sheriff.

2.  A man called to say he came across a broadside crash on highway 14 and 65 (when it was rural and only a flashing light there) and there were no survivors.  He asked me to call the Highway Patrol.

Both incidents are true.  I'm sure there are more.

Morris;  Remember the night your newsroom console caught fire at the downtown studio?  I recall that when I went down to unlock the door for the fire department, you beat all the responding trucks, and you lived all the way over by KOLR!

I got a call from a character once that wanted the number for a tow truck company, 'cause KTTS was always at the scene of wrecks and we should know a good one.   He got rather testy when I didn't know one so I looked one up in the phone book fro him and he seemed satisfied.

Then there was the belly dancer with swords who used to pester the city fathers about appearing before a council session.  She used to call the newsroom all the time talking about the merits of belly dancing and the evils of city hall.  I bet her and DVJ would have hit it off great together.  Didn't she (seems her name was Sheba) end up hanging herself while incarcerated in the city or county jail?

The ones I remember most were the threatening calls from Teamsters during the  Associated Wholesale Grocers strike, following the Morris James/Barry Johnson undercover investigative reports into violence surrounding that work stoppage.  KTTS and KTTS  News now that was good radio for the Ozarks.

Yes Shebba did. At the Baptist Hospital. But the funniest thing she did was to dance on the police dept porch. Facing Chestnut. And it took a couple of days for anyone to see but it used to say " Springfiel Police HQ. She made it say Springfield Lice HQ by taking some letters off.

But do you remember Morris getting his microphone stomped into the pavement by a Teamster?

I hope that everyone has viewed the youtube video about CKLW 20/20 news...that is so good...that "dinosaur media" is awesome, that was when radio was magic, nothing coming out of the speakers that comes close to that these days.  Thanks again Morris for posting that.

You Tube also has a reunion from the early 80s of those guys. Several of them had an impression of Byron McGregor. McGregor shows up later and expresses some remorse about the "wording" of some of those stories.

By the way, I've been wanting to feature Sheba as part of a Naughty Springfield post on by blog. If you gat a story send me a private message.

I would  loved to have seen more discussion on the style of delivery and writing from the CKLW news staff...that was classic stuff from when radio was really fun.

It seems tho' that are still more "lurkers" than posters here.

I don't think that it's been posted here before, so here's a link with much, much more from the good 'ol days of CKLW:

http://www.thebig8.net

A lot of interesting material there.
