I have been hearing and seeing about the "Weather Alert" Radios being promoted via TV...it reminded me that back in the 70's at KTTS we promoted "Redi-Alert" Radios that would wake you in the middle of the night, etc, We sold a lot of them all over the 20 county listening area. They were triggered when we played the 1000 cycle tone and would turn on the radio tuned to our station. Only problem with them...they could not be targeted to different areas like the new ones now are. If there was a Tornado warning in Warsaw, way up north, but in our listening area, we would of course us the tone to activate the Redi-Alert's. Problem was, if you lived in Harrison Ark. for instance, you could care less about Warsaw Mo. Because of that problem, they were only moderately popular. We did get a lot of publicity about them via Civil Defence, etc. however.
