| I sit here bored at the Salina library thinking geez the board the dead, so what topic can I bring up that is sure to get somebody talking. Missouri State sports. What happened ? Seems like MSU sports have fallen off the map and are just not a big deal anymore. Used to be you didnt have to be a student in order to care. Maybe it was because we were winning and had marketable personalities. In the past, XGM has posted on the consistent lack of interest in MSU football, but seems like even our beloved basketball has lost its luster. MY half baked theories are, The new arena has priced regular fans out. The message seems to be if your not the sort who could be profiled in 417 magazine we dont want your attendence. The name change, MSU just doesnt say Springfield like SMS did. The won/loss record, its been a decade since the Lady Bears last great run ... The rise of MU sports, the Tigers being good has made MSU less attractive... plus, the Springfield Cardinals have replaced the Bears as our local team. Before I moved, I lived spitting distance to the college and the passion of yesteryear is gone.

| I say DITTO to the above. SMSU was us. We have moved to somthing that made us feel our generation is too old and MSU has moved on to a new fan. Change is not always a good thing. Notice when we see somthing with a logo from the 50,-70,s we buy it?

| You can talk about the new arena, name change, etc - etc....However, all of that goes away with winning...it's that simple....winning solves everything.

<RANT>SMS has always been a wantabe school - they wantabe Mizzou. They couldn't get their name change through until they bribed enough people to force it through the legislature. SMS gained at MU's expense for the 8-12 years in the 80s and early 90s when nearly all of the statewide officeholders were from SW Missouri (Ashcroft, Webster, etc.) They got themselves sugardaddies in Hammons and Plaster to keep up with Mizzou. Mizzou upgrades their football stadium, SMS puts in a new press box. MU builds a fancy new arena, SMS builds a smaller fancy new arena.</rant>
Whew! Got that off my chest!
Anyhow, you had a pretty good coach for awhile in Spoonhour, but once he was gone, you've been on a revolving door. Speaking from experience, when you get into that 4 to 5 year cycle of replacing coaches, you never seem to gain. Shoot, even these days NW Missouri St. football is discussed more than SMS.
Was at my home county fair this weekend (East Central part of Missouri). There was so much more Mizzou gear worn than I have ever seen - and this is two hours from Columbia. The local paper reporter was so excited in following a kid playing for Mizzou playing for another school in the HS conference. People are excited. And not one kid I talked to was going to SMS - several to Lincoln, NW Missouri, CMSU (UCM) and Mizzou - not one to SMS.
And you can't tell me that being on TV sports doesn't influence admissions?

| I always thought the SMS to MSU name change was a bonehead move, akin to many that are made in radio.

Maybe SMSMSU ( sounds like a cable network ) just isnt a jock school. Not when the most competitive event is the invite only, forienors only ( unless you are crazy good and I am not) soccer game they play on Sundays. Ok just showing my alleged "insideness" Really what is MSU ? Jock school ? Party School ? Music school ? Political activism school ? Artsy craftsy hot bed of Bohemia school ? I dont know, I never figured it out LOL...
