| What ever happend to organ music at the ball park? Ernie Hays could send some of his tunes down. Base ball and apple pie have been replaced with Noise steroids and acid pie. With this noise instead of some pleasant organ music that is tradition I can see why we have a messed up world. Your thoughts.

I have never been to a Springfield Cardinals game. I did watch the PBS thing the other night on the original Springfield Cardinals. I have read both of Whitey Herzog's books. In his second book he complains that there is so much distracting junk at the ballpark a kid can go to a game and never actually see the game. My father took me to my first Royals game in 1974, since that time I have probably been to the K 60 times in my life and it is still a magical spiritual experience to go the ballpark, it is still cool to listen to Dead Air Denny and Ramblin Ryan while driving. So yeah, teams having 8 different alternative uniforms may be crazy, guys coming to the plate with thier personalized song, those crazy lawn mower mazes in the outfield and yeah I do have the soundtrack on CD at home of Ken Burns baseball, you still gotta roll with the times. Now if they legalize aluminum bats in the pro's THAT IS A REASON TO GO BESERK !!!

You should go to a Springfield Cardinals game. They are a lot of fun. Decent baseball with a lot of goofy stuff between innings (if you are that much of a purist, just don't watch).
Aluminum bats won't come to the pros. Too unsafe. Other levels only use them because of cost.

| I live 10 minute walking distance from Hammons and I still won't go to a Springfield Cardinals game, WHY ? Because I am a ROYALS fan. I won't eat at Domino's and support that idiot sign guy. I don't patronize any business that has excessive amount of Cardinal junk. I am angry now because I know Jim Rome is gonna get bumped tomorrow for a Springfield Cardinal day game. Dude, I went to Cards Royals game at the K about 5 years ago and got to see "Carinul" ( thats the drunk Mike Shannon pronunciation) nation up close. Truth is, most of the BS was fun at the ol ballpark stuff and I had a good time, but there is an element to Cardinal fan in a large group that is scary. Best story was this old woman totally dressed head to toe in Cards gear, she was standing in front of the glass case where they keep the 85 World Series trophy and she starts going batbleep nuts and looking to throw down with anyone in blue " there it is there's the trophy YOU STOLE You don't deserve that" and on and on. Even other Cardinal fans backed off after awhile.

| Cardinal fans are great fans but alot like Red Sox, Yankee and Kansas Jayhawk fans a little too self righteous and arrogant for me.

| Hey most of my friends are Cardinal fans. The overwhelming majority are good people, hell I sometimes wonder why I defend my home state so much considering I was fired and run out. That minimum wage in Kansas is ALOT lower than Missouri yet it costs more to live there. In 1997 and 1998 I hated board opping the Royals and listen to Denny and Fred bitch and moan and cry for the return of Whitey Herzog, the small strike zone and 4 hour sloooow American league games ect. So forgive me board, I am crazy and have a selective memory.

| "dead air Denny"...I love it. They do have more pregnant pauses than any broadcast on the planet. I still enjoy his take on the game and am pleased that he is in the radio wing of the MLB Hall of Fame.

Ouch....I don't agree with this comparison in general. Yes, there are wingnuts in every crowd (even Royals fans), but obnoxious Red Sox and Jayhawks fans are long suffering fans that have had recent success and don't know what to do with it (full disclosure if you care - I am working on my masters from KU but am not a particular jayhawks fan). Yankees fans are just obnoxious. Just imagine what Royals and/or Cubs fans would be like if either team won a WS anytime soon.
However given the tone of the post, it seems conspicuous that Chiefs fans are absent from the comparison. They go to the top of the list of arrogant, in your face fans in this area. As a college roommate of mine used to say "God, family, Chiefs."

I should clarify that I was referring to KU football as long suffering by any measure. Basketball is a different story. However, if UM-Columbia had even half the history of KU basketball, the fans would be unbearable too.

| I would not compare Cardinals fans to Red Sox or Yankees fans. I have been to the K when those teams have been there. Sox fans are actually polite and have a fascination with us midwesterners the way you would someone from a foriegn country. Real Sox fans from New England that is not mid westerners who have adopted the Sox. Yankee fan has been humbled in recent years but generally fit thier stereotype. Cub fans are dorks except actual from Chicago fans. It those fashion victem people who have to drink thier beer out of just the right bottle and wear just the right hat and T-shirt. I do think the resurgence in Royals pride is a direct result of getting upstaged at home by fans of the road teams especially St. Louis and the Cards winning a title. I would compare Cards fan to Nebraska football fan. Royals fan is generally a dork from Kansas, I would be exhibit A. Royals fans are bad for abandoning the team in September when they are out of it. I think ( I base this on Salina) there are alot of crossover Royals/Cubs fans and the Royals recent suckiness has actually made people love them more. My favorite National league is the REDS, blame it on being a kid in the 1970's.
