Some of you "Sports Guys"...what's the deal on Springfield HS Football anyway?  I read in today's News Leader that Kickapoo's coach quit after 1 season...Glendale & Hillcrest coaches also quit after the 2007 season.  I noted for years that Springfield HS team cant ever beat an out-of-town school in Football.  They can beat each other but not any team from Bolivar, Branson, Ava, Joplin, Rolla...you name it.  Several years ago I worked at KWOS in Jefferson City and we had a coach, Pete Atkins, who had a winning streak of 75 games.  That's when I learned the importance of a coach, you know the boys in Jeff City weren't any better than any other town of like size.

I suppose it's because Springfield has always been a Basketball town.  I recall, when I moved here in 1961, I went to an SMS Football game, it was so bad, I never went back, ever.  What gives you guys?

You will find the booster clubs of these respective schools have much influence over a coach and his/her future.  Ya don't produce, baby, and you are outta here.

I wonder what would happen if the Springfield schools said forget it, dump football altogether and put that money in other programs like art or academics. Would anybody really miss it or get that upset.  In Burlington where I used to live, Friday night home games were an EVENT attended by everyone regardless if they had kids or not. I havent attended a Parkview game since I graduated and would feel like a idiot sitting in Kennedy stadium a 40 year old man with no kids rooting for my "alma Matter". The culture of Springfield is just so different.  I promise you there are more kids on Walnut street right now at the arts fest than attended high school football games or MSU.
