Houston has signed general manager Rick Smith to a four-year contract extension, in the process keeping him with the team at least through 2012. At 38, Smith is the youngest GM in the NFL.

In something of a surprise, New Orleans has fired V.P. of Player Personnel Rick Mueller in a restructuring of the player personnel department. And it does not appear that the Saints are going to replace Mueller. Instead, both Rick Reiprish, New Orleans’ director of college scouting, and director of pro scouting Ryan Pace will now report directly to G.M. Mickey Loomis.

The New York Jets have hired Scott Cohen for their newly created position of assistant general manager. Cohen spent the last seven seasons as Philadelphia's director of pro personnel and will work with G.M. Mike Tannenbaum on day-to-day operations. The Jets’ player personnel director Terry Bradway and college scouting director Joey Clinkscales will be getting new titles with the team and their contracts are being finalized, while JoJo Wooden will continue to direct the Jets' pro personnel department.

Hamilton of the Canadian league has signed former Florida QB Chris Leak. Leak led the Gators to a 13-1 record and the 2007 BCS National Championship in his senior season, along the earning the championship game’s offensive MVP award, but went undrafted at the 2007 NFL draft. Leak did sign with Chicago as an undrafted free agent, but was waived prior to the start of the regular season.

The New York Jets made several front-office moves late last week including the hiring of Scott Cohen as an assistant general manager. Cohen was the directory of player personnel with the Eagles for seven seasons, and will assist Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum. The move frees up Terry Bradway, who is the senior personnel executive, to do more regional scouting. Meanwhile, Joey Clinkscales was promoted to vice president of college scouting, while Michael Davis becomes assistant director of college scouting. The Jets also gave JoJo Wooden a contract extension to remain as assistant director of player personnel.

With very little going on the NFL front these days with the opening of training camps still about a month away, the Canadian league kicks off its 97th season later this evening with a double header. Montreal will open the season at Hamilton at 7 PM ET tonight, while Grey Cup favorite British Columbia will be at Calgary at 10 PM ET. Friday, Toronto will be at Winnipeg, while defending Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan will host Edmonton on Saturday night. Saskatchewan paid a price winning last year’s title winning run as former head coach bolted to Mississippi where he takes over as offensive coordinator, while QB Kerry Joseph was traded to Toronto as the small-market Roughriders felt they could no longer afford him. Saskatchewan, though, was able to sign a couple of top-rated undrafted rookie free agents passed over at the 2008 NFL draft in former Oklahoma State WR Adarius Bowman and record-setting DII North Dakota WR Weston Dressler. One other undrafted free agent of note to sign up north was former Oregon State PK Alexis Serna will kick for Winnipeg. The most notable of-season CFL signing, though, was Toronto’s acquisition of former NFL WR David Boston, the 8th player taken overall by Arizona at the 1999 NFL draft. How long Boston lasts with the Argos, though, could e problematic as the oft-injured player is already hobbled by a stress fracture in his foot which likely will require surgery at some point. Boston, in fact, is one of two former NFL draft first rounders on Toronto’s roster as CB Willie Middlebrooks, the 24th player taken overall at the 2001 draft by Denver will wear the double blue this fall. The CFL season will culminate with the Grey Cup game November 29th in Calgary.

The sad part here is Mike posts several times in this thread most of these statements can be found on other websites...once again an example of copyright infringement (in some cases, otherwise paraphrasing was used which can also be infringement).  The man cannot even comment about sports in his own thoughts and words.  Poor guy.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell fired the first salvo in what will likely be contentious war of words with the league’s Players Association over a new collective bargaining agreement. And Goodell took dead aim at the NFL’s rookie salary structure which he described as "ridiculous" in that it rewards untested rookies with lucrative contracts. Goodell said he favors lowering salaries offered to rookies, but allowing a provision for those players to renegotiate their deals after proving themselves on the field. Goodell said he plans to open negotiations with the players union on a revamped labor deal this fall after team owners voted unanimously to opt out of the CBA that was signed in spring 2006. The decision to opt out maintains labor peace through 2011, but will result in changes regarding the NFL's salary cap and contract signings if a new deal is not signed by March 2009. If no deal is reached by then the league will enter the following season without a salary cap during which the time for free agency would rise from four years to six and allow teams to protect one extra player with franchise or transition tags.

It appears to be something that Dallas CB Adam ‘Don’t call me Pacman’ Jones must have slept through, but all 252 players selected at the 2008 draft are in Carlsbad California this week for the NFL’s annual rookie symposium. Over the course of the week, the players will hear presentations on everything from substance abuse, particularly steroid policy and awareness, to financial advice on how to prepare for life after football. The symposium was created in 1997 as a vehicle to guide players through the murky waters of becoming even more celebrated athletes.
