It looks like FFD/Community is up to something in Joplin. They've made several recent applications to the FCC. Here's what I've found so far:
KQYX 1450 changes COL from Joplin to Galena, KS. Power drops slightly from 1 kw to 940 watts. It looks like the transmitter moves slightly as well but stays in the same general area.
KCAR-FM 104.3 changes COL from Galena to Baxter Springs. No other changes so far.
KMOQ 107.1 changes COL from Baxter Springs to Columbus. Transmitter moves to the KOAM/KFJX site, and station goes from class A to C3. It will extend the 60 dBu coverage up to north of Pittsburg and out past Carthage. The contour will still stop short of Neosho.
So, one has to wonder what else they're up to. It doesn't make sense that they'd change all of these COL's without making changes to KJML, which is licensed to Columbus. If they were only trying to upgrade KMOQ, they could have left it in Baxter Springs, and all four FM's cover Columbus at their present sites. There doesn't appear to be any application for upgrading KJML, and I'm not sure how you could do it easily with KOSP and KKOY-FM being first adjacents and relatively close. However, one has to think they're up to something bigger. What other incentive would they have for jockeying all these stations and leaving two of them in Columbus?

That doen't make any sense to me either. 1450 ex WMBH was the oldest Joplin station licensed in 1927 . I can't see why they want to move to Galena.
I think their transmitter is still at the old Zimmer bldg on the tower where Zimmers 102.5 use to be located..Maybe Zimmer is selling the building and tower and they are forced to move. Could be moving to tower of KCAR Which is licensed to Galena.
Don't know why KMOQ would want to move furthur from Joplin, maybe a better signal in Pittsburg, they can't compete with KSYN now due to weaker signal.

It's all about upgrading KMOQ. In order to upgrade KMOQ to a C3, it has to move a little north. So, it doesn't 'quite' cover Baxter Springs. The Washington consulting engineers came up the "musical chairs" scenario. Still waiting on the CP for KMOQ.
Also, the change of transmitter location for KQYX will move it to the tower behind the KQYX studios. FFD actually owns this tower, and won't have to rent from Zimmer anymore. It's also taller than the old one, thus the slight reduction in power to match the higher efficiency.
Simple as that. No conspiracies here.

That makes sense about KQYX but why Galena KS COL ?
That tower behind their studio is currently used by WMBH 1560. Thats the station they sold for one dollar.WMBH is operating on a shoe string, how long will they remain on the air, or will both stations use the same tower. It is shorter as it is the 1560 tower..
I can understand the move by KMOQ to put a better signal into Pittsburg

| I thought KQYX was originally there back when KSYN and the meat market were there?

That is correct but the 2 stations swapped calls a while back.
KQYX is now on 1450 and WMBH 1560.
Wm B Neal put both KSYN 92.5 and KQYX 1460 on the air around 1961.He sold KSYN and picked up 1450 several years back so 1450 transmitter was still at the old location on W 13th where 102.5 was located.
1560 WMBH was sold for one dollar to Hardman BC a couple years ago by bankrupt Petracom. but transmitter and studio remained in building on W20th.
This is really confusing.

I guess I don't get why they couldn't just flip COL between 107.1 and 104.3 (KCAR/Baxter Springs, KMOQ/Galena) without bringing 1450 into the mix but so it is.
Did they ever do anything about the atrocious audio on 1450? As far back as I can remember, 1450 has sounded awful. As an aside, under LandGo, 1560 had the best audio of any AM I heard in any market (majors included.)
BTW, whatever happened to the Urban format that was on 1560?

There was some reason why that COL swap wouldn't work. Can't remember it now.
As far as 1450 is concerned, we replaced the old Bauer transmitter with a solid state Armstrong earlier this year. It's made a lot of difference. As part of that upgrade, we had to retune the tower. Holy moly, what a mess that was. I didn't realize how much AM RF there was out there until we tried to connect an OIB to the tower and had to ask 1230 to shut down, just so we could tune the darn thing.
1560 is still on the tower at 20th street. We're going to have to build a diplexer to accomodate both signals on the same tower. Kintronics says it no problem, just costly. 1560 is using a little BE solid state transmitter, with an Optimod 9400 processor.
Combining those two stations on the same tower is going to be a hoot. I'm hoping there's enough money in the budget to upgrade the processing on 1450 to Optimod.

WMBH is remodeling a building on Main Street to put there studio in. Anybody know how the progress is going on that? Mr. Hardman is supposidly going to start hiring more people sometime this month or next. I've actually talked to him and he seems like a good guy. Especially since he's "interested" in hiring me. But I'd sure hate to give up my $9.00/hr. job for Amex to go to work for him.

Remodeling a building on Main Street? I have not been over for a while--where is it?
Trivia question: where was the original longtime WMBH studio on Main? Where was the first 1310 studio? (the correct answer wins absolutely nothing!)
---radio station that evolved into a tv station also had hq downtown on Main..

When I was driving through there a couple weeks ago, it was early afternoon on a Sunday, and I heard gospel a la Hallelujah FM. As far as I've been able to tell, it's still running urban programming for the most part.

The building that WMBH is currently remodeling is at 611 S. Main. It's diagonally(sp?) across the street from City Hall. They have banners up in the front windows. Haven't been ty there lately, but they had the windows blacked out with some sort of material inside the building.

| The WMBH remodel is a bit of historic irony almost. For decades it was in the nearby now-restored Frisco Building. KFSB1310, the third signal in town, was in the Interstate Grocers building at Tenth and Main, as Joplin's first regional station. KSWM/KODE radio, the second station in the city, was on the Connor Hotel balcony. gee...wmbh actually wants to be seen if not heard?
