It was announced to the staff of the FFD stations in Joplin Monday that the deal has been signed to sell the stations to Gene Bicknell's American Media Investments.

This is surely the worst kept secret in Joplin, but the deal has been signed.  It will be submitted to the FCC, and will probably close in a couple of months.

FFD Radio Group (formerly Community Radio of Joplin) owns KJML-FM, KCAR-FM, KMOQ-FM, KBTN-FM, KBTN-AM and KQYX-AM.

(Full disclosure: I am a contract engineer for the FFD.  As I mentioned earlier, this has been the worst kept secret in town.  But, I held back from posting it until it was officially announced.  I expect to see it filed with the FCC within a few days. Art)

Are they the ones that own KKOW?

That might mean some of KQYX talk shows might be moved to 10kw AM KKOW. better night coverage by far..That sure gives Zimmer more competition.

Hope you can stay on as contract Engineer

Does that include the stations in Texarkana?  I understand that Warren McDonald is the GM of those.

Yes, it's six stations in Joplin and five in Texarkana.  Warren's driving back and forth every week.

The deal probably won't close until late Feb or March, and there's no LMA.  So things will continue status quo until then.

With the stations in Texarkana, I have to ask if Kowboy Koaches will be sending people to the casinos in Shreveport now, too?  :P

KKOW is the gold standard of a full service radio station. If they do business like they do in Pittsburg, the Zimmers will have a challenge on their hands.

Art, I just got done reading the multiple ownership study on the application at the FCC website.  I noticed they said they would "surrender the license" of KBZI.  To me, that implies having the license canceled or deleted, but I can't imagine them just turning the license into the FCC when they could donate the station to Pitt State or some other nonprofit.  Do you know what they're planning to do with KBZI?

I noticed the same error in R&R, Inside Radio and Radio Ink's report about the sale of the FFD stations to AMI.

They report that KBTN-FM is dark.  That's obviously not true.  Wonder where that error came from?

I think the BIA market report still lists it as dark, too.  I suspect that's where the error came from.  You can confirm my suspicion if you look at the sale filing.

By the way, I have more time during my lunch hour to check things.  So, I checked the BIA report, and it shows KBTN-FM and WMBH as "DARK."  You can check out the filing by searching the FCC database under KBTN-FM, and it will be under the multiple ownership exhibit.

Also, are you at liberty to explain the purpose of the COL shifts of almost every FFD/Community station?  I can understand the purpose of moving KCAR from Galena to Baxter Springs and KJML from Baxter Springs to Columbus.  It doesn't look like anyone gets any sort of a facilities upgrade.  Also, do you think these moves will still happen under AMI?
