I you ever listened to KJEL or 5 minutes, if you worked at KJEL from 1989-2006 you knew John Fowler. He served as Production Director, On-Air, News, and Operations Manager and was the voice of Santa every December since the 80s.

His funeral took place this morning and the visitation was last night. He died Wednesday from heart failure, but many of us found out about services the day of. So, I apologize if I didn't inform anyone in time.

John gave me my first radio job...and my first JOB. I learned a lot from him. I didn't know it at the time, but he was actually filling my head with knowledge and I thank him for that. He taught me how to use my pipes, read radar, and so much about being a jock and not a ego-crazed jock.

Before coming to Missouri, John had spent time at KOIL as John Fredericks, Father John at KGOR, KQKQ, and KLMS in Lincoln. As a kid he interned for the Reel Don Steele at KOIL before Steele headed west.

Here is John's obit from the Lebanon Daily Record...

John P. Fowler, 59, of Lebanon, died Wednesday morning, March 4, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital-Springfield.

He was born Aug. 8, 1949, in Omaha, Neb. to Olen Paul and Marjorie Cody Fowler, who preceded him in death.
On Jan. 15, 1971, he married Patricia Jean Callow.

In 1979, he moved from Nebraska to Branson, where he worked for the KRZK Radio Station. In 1989, he came to Lebanon and was the meteorologist and station operations manager for several years. He also was an investigator for the Lebanon Rural Fire Department and served on the board of directors for 20 years. He had served as the treasurer for the department as well.

He was raised in the Catholic faith.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of the home; four sons, Elliott and his wife, Kim, Everett, Jon, Jr. and his wife, Kim and Brian Fowler and his wife, Chelse, all of Lebanon; six grandchildren, Jordan, Madison, Reagan, Cameron, Tyler and Robbie; a brother, Jim Fowler, of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Roxanna Shimizu, of Chicago, Ill., also several nieces and nephews.

Services for John P. Fowler will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009, in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home with Roger Tribble officiating.

Burial will be in the Lebanon Cemetery, under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Lebanon.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Another tragic passing this past Friday.  Brian James was only 48.  He was a fantastic voice talent who, for years, provided the image voice for 101 The Fox KCFX in K.C. among many other endeavors.  A demo is available at http://www.brianjames.com

Funeral service for commentator Paul Harvey were Saturday in Chicago.

John also gave me my first commercial gig...with the encouragement of Monte Schisler. Prayers to his family -- he had an incredible voice and a good heart.
