Press Release:
KZGM’s “A Pacifica Fourth” is featured in Pacifica Radio Network’s popular “Sprouts” program
Despite not having been on the air for even 3 months, a program produced on a new community radio station right here in the Ozarks is being featured on a national broadcast. “Sprouts” is a weekly program that, according to the Pacifica Radio Network, “features local radio production and stories from many radio stations and local media groups around the world. It is produced in collaboration with community radio stations and independent producers across the country. The program is coordinated and distributed by Pacifica Radio and offered free of charge to all radio stations.”
Radio stations across the country and around the world submit potential Sprouts programs to the network via the internet. Those programs deemed broadcast worthy are fed from a satellite to all network stations each Thursday at 2PM Central time. “A Pacifica Fourth”, produced by Mark Emanuel from the Ozark’s very own KZGM 88.1 FM, has been selected by the national network to be featured as the Sprouts episode the week of July 2, just in time for Independence Day that weekend. A Pacifica Fourth features alternative songs for and about America and the 4th of July, including songs by Mitch Miller, Nirvana, Simon & Garfunkel, Green Day, and John Philip Sousa.
“This is a big surprise, and an even bigger honor,” says Emanuel, producer and on-air personality simply known as “DJ Mark”. “The 4th of July music special was supposed to be a small, one hour program that maybe one or two other network stations picked up for broadcast. After being impressed by the one hour version, the national network affiliate coordinator reached out to us specifically requesting a 30 minute long version for their network broadcast ‘Sprouts’ program. Normally it’s the other way around- stations usually beg to be featured on this program. Even more unique is that Sprouts is generally a talk program, not an entertainment program, so this is a break in tradition for them.”
Although complete statistics are unavailable, Pacifica Radio believes that Sprouts is broadcast on anywhere from 40-50 radio stations every week, both across the country and overseas. The program will be fed via satellite to roughly 150 network stations and is available to all radio stations, even those not part of Pacifica. This means that KZGM’s production could receive global attention, and make a name for the new Ozarks-based community radio station.
“Locally, KZGM will not only air the nationally broadcast Sprouts version, but also the hour long special on Independence Day itself, so listeners in the Ozarks can get their fix of unique, sometimes humorous, yet somewhat familiar, 4th of July music,” Mark added. “I’ll make sure that communities served by KZGM get mentioned in the national broadcast, including my friends and neighbors up in Licking.” Sprouts is broadcast weekly on KZGM at 2 p.m. on Thursdays. The hour long 4th of July special will air on Independence Day itself.
“When we first conceived of a community radio station we wanted it to not only build the sense of community in our area, but to bring attention to our area and communities,” said KZ88 News Director Gene Colliflower.
“This just proves what a great opportunity exists at our all-volunteer listener-supported station,” remarked Kazie Perkins, Operations Director.
KZGM listeners are already familiar with DJ Mark, who produces and hosts “Trance on the Porch”, a weekly trance and progressive dance mix show airing Saturday nights at 10, and “Sentimental Journey”, a weekly oldies request program featuring pop music from the 1930s through the 1950s, airing Friday mornings at 9. DJ Mark also created a miniseries documentary called “The Evolution of Dance Music” for KZGM, which was also distributed to Pacifica Radio Network stations via the internet.

Congratulations, TechPuppy! We look forward to hearing the show. We really enjoy the "Evolution of Dance" series, and will tune in for the Friday morning show. Sorry, but Saturday nights run thin after the first segue.
Great work.
