I agree with Art... Take the current Shepard philosophy (minus doing play-by-play of a fire drill... that is a little extreme) and jazz it up, but still keep the commitment to local news, weather, sports and that good stuff.
I listened to KURM in NW Arkansas the other day while I was driving up I-540... had I stayed with it for much longer than I did, I might have been tempted to drive off into one of those big valleys and end it all. Kermit of course was Jerrell's right hand man for so many years, and takes quite a bit of pride in the fact that his station is boring and bland, and does some live broadcasts that are actually quite stupid. They have been known to pre-empt Sportsrap for a complete live broadcast of the "Little Mr. McDonald County Pageant" or something that all of three people even attended much less are listening to. And who can forget the weekly live play-by-play broadcast of the parade of cattle through the Washington County Livestock Auction that continues every Thursday to this very day...
Today's generation isn't going to deal with that.... half of them barely know AM exists. BUT... there will always be a place for local news, weather, and sports. And the Shepard stations have so much heritage to build on...
The same company paid $2,500,000 for KGRN-AM, a 500 watt daytimer in Grinnell, Iowa. Unless there is something I don't know about that station... that is a lot for such a small signal in 2007.

You know, I was in central Arkansas September of last year, and I got a chance to listen to Kermit's other station, KARV 610/101.3 out of Russellville. I was quite surprised to hear a Claire McCaskill campaign ad in the middle of Arkansas! All I can figure was that the program was a total simulcast from KURM or that you have to buy all of his stations if you want airtime on any of them.

| By the way, does anyone else think this sounds a lot like Goodman? Inside Radio is reporting a former TV network executive will be buying just under 200 stations from Clear Channel and will end up with approximately 40 of the "departing markets." Announcement is expected by the end of this week.

Yes, I wondered that myself. I had a short email conversation with Goodman a couple of weeks ago. Nothing special, but I was surprised that I got a response at all.
Still interested in what kind of philosphy Goodman will bring to the table. Is he just another group owner, or does he bring something new? I'm anxious to see.
Some of my engineer buddies are concerned that we're returning to the late 80s, which was a time of many owners, and no money for engineers.

| Worked for a Shepherd disciple and fondly remember the station doing play by play of the recreation commission's summer youth "pet parade"...and yes, it was my first job!

Wow, Art...I've been trying to find information on Goodman and you found his e-mail? I must be under too many rocks. (I'd love to have that e-mail...if'n you'd be so kind)
(I think the snow is finally done....but don't quote me)
