I know this is a RADIO board and there seems to be no "sports" section, which is OK with me, I am not a big Sports fan at all but...

I have wondered for years the answer to this question, seems like it happens every year... "Why can't Springfield HS Football teams beat any team from out of town?" I have noted this since I moved here back in the early 60's... and again this morning looking at the HS scores from last nights...

West Plains beat Kickapoo 26/15

Joplin beat Glendale 47/27

Camdenton beat Parkview 42/0

Waynesville beat Hillcrest 51/7

Fair Grove beat Central 46/14

Willow Springs beat Catholic 25/14

ALL Springfield teams are loosers, unless they play each other then someone has to win.  What gives?  My tought is: MSU has been a WINNER in Basketball for years and in Football, loosers for years...could this HS thing be caused by that?  Lets hear some ideas from you REAL sports fans.

Springfield isnt " Friday nights lights." I get around, I work at 2 resturants, one of them being the Kentwood Hall cafeteria ( MSU campus) and most of those kids could care less about football. I graduated from Parkview, there wasnt what you would call football fever, and I went there when they was " good". In a small town you are playing for town pride. Everybody comes to the games and follow the program whether they have kids in school or not. Springfield kids are into skateboards, soccer, baseball, basketball, music, having a job, hanging out.... Maybe if you pooled all the good players from the 5 city schools into ONE Springfield team...

I have heard before, "Springfield's boys are split up between 6 HS's ...so what, I'm not sure but, would be willing to bet that any of the 4 Public HS's are bigger than any HS in the outlying area.  Therefore, each school should have an adequate supply of potential football players.  Personally, I think it's the coaches.  When I was in Central Missouri in the late 50's...Jefferson City Jay's had a national record of something like 75 wins in a row.  That's when I really started believing in "coaches make the differance".  I know that the boys in Jeff City were no better than those in Columbia, Mexico, Boonville, Moberly, etc.  It had to be the Coach, his name was Pete Atkins.  They may still own the national record for most wins in a row.

Another theory about "Why can't Springfield HS's beat anyone out of town" I heard the other day, it is:

Parents are smarter in Springfield than those in smaller towns and know that "15 minutes of glory is not worth a lifetime of misery".  i.e. injuries in Football frequently do cause pain for a lifetime.   Frankly my son did not play because of that very reason, I discouraged him strongly.   I'm not sure I buy the bit of Springfield parents are smarter than those in Webb City, Lebanon, Bolivar, etc.  but it is a thought.

Meanwhile, all the Springfield schools who played an out of towner lost again this week.

Let me ask you this, lets say one of the Springfield High Schools did go undefeated and show promise to win state, would Springfield care ? Would it create the kind of drop everything, lets have a parade and soap our car windows fury like winning does in a small town. Even if you brought in super coach, practiced every dirty recruiting tactic there is to hoard all the best kids into your program, got a cable access channel to broadcast your games  would  Springfield finally be a football town ? My guess is probably not, or it would fade if the winning didnt keep up, or as soon as basketball season and baseball Spring training started. Just my opinion.

Ken...Good point, ever since I moved here (1961) I have noticed that there is a lack of interest in Football. Frankly, I think it is because SMS (now MSU) has long been a Basketball power with many winning seasons under their belt. While at the same time, their Football has  been for the most part...VERY POOR.  This year, I think they are finally having more wins than losses.  I just thought it might make for an interesting topic for this board.;)

Hey XGM, there is an article in todays ( Oct 5) The Standard ( MSU student paper) where one of the student columnists complains about the lack of support for MSU football and how the crowds at the games are so disinterested. Made me think of you, they probably have a website, I dont know where to get a copy of the Standard outside of the campus.

Central LOST to Lee's Summit

Wait till next year. Parkview is showing promise in the JV teams. They have been winning. Perhaps if we all start going to the games in Springfield and support the teams and sponsor the kids would see the limelight again. WE ARE PARKVIEW. Basketball has always been big here. SMSU baseball was just in the last few years been known here in town. Hammons made that happen with the field of dreams he built. And Keith has put some great teams together. It has been neat to watch the World Series the past few years and see some that played at SMSU and Al Michael's say that. I also think it is important for the schools to have their own team.

Another Friday night and again...same story, a bunch of losers!  Glendale did beat Lebanon a week or so ago. I think that's the one and only win this year for a Springfield HS to beat an out of town team.  No Radio station in their right mind would ever touch live HS football broadcasts in Springfield...they would rank 25th out of 24 stations.

I'm sorry, generally I agree with you, XGM - you're the kind of veteran broadcaster who has ALL the goods.  BUT, this time, I'm going to qualify my disagreement with your assessment.  My qualification begins thus:  High school football, if properly marketed to sponsors/advertisers, and if properly presented by the broadcast team (IE good play-by-play AND color commentary AND stats AND any scores from other games in the area) could generate both revenue (probably the reason to do the broadcast in the first place) AND listeners - especially if a particular team is getting noticed by their own area residents.  High school football broadcasts can actually be MUCH MORE INTERESTING than college, if presented well.  You can always have the half-time performance of the marching band (assuming that the school still has a music program...don't even get me started on THIS issue) broadcast on the air - just to drive away listeners, if you prefer to get rid of them!

But, even more qualification:  if there are 24 stations, there's no way that they would rank 25th.

So I qualified my comments to death.  File a suit! :dude:

I see what you are saying about "presented well" and you could win listeners and dollars by broadcasting sports.  Where I disagree is this:  "presented well" is a relative term."  I dialed around Friday night to area stations (heard on my car radio throughout sw mo) doing PBP.  With the exception of KADI doing the Nixa game, most sounded like they were beng broadcast through tin cans.  That isn't "presented well"... that is "presented cheap."  When the crowds cheered, it sounded like I was listening to a VOICE OF AMERICA broadcast on a short wave radio from the 1960's.

With too many broadcasters "presented well" means cheap, inexpensive means.  Radio has become that way and will no doubt stay in that mode until it's too late!
