as 2007 comes to conclusion what are the top news stories?...lots of coverage of missing women...wicked weather...illegal immigration...lots of recalls, toys, toothpaste, pet food, human food, cars...high gas prices ...the way too long race for the white house...wars and rumors of wars...this Bhutto assination could be big...what do you think...what is big on the local scene?

Last winter's Ice Storm would be the top story locally I think.  As to what other stories would follow and in what order, I'm not sure.  Someone directly involved in gathering news would have the best ideas. The Ice Storm effected virtually everyone from Ozark north.

I would like to see in 2008 on the national level... "90% Voter Turn Out" for the Presidential Election.  That would effectively de-nut the Lobbyists and put the voters back in control of our country. Unfortunately, we will have the usual 30 to 35% voter turn out, which is horrible.  Wonder what it would take to get a 90% turnout?

I have been thinking about why people don't vote, here are a few of my thoughts:

1) Afraid they will have jury duty if they vote.

2) Too stupid to know who to vote for.

3) Totally bored with the whole political "thing".

4) Don't really agree with "the Far Right" -or- the "Far Left" and think that's all there is about political parties....or wish there was a 3rd party.

5)  Probably the main one in my opinion...by the time election day comes around, they have heard so much "negative mud slinging ads" they figure that they are ALL Crooks, both sides. And they don't want to vote for anyone that bad.

I would like to hear others thoughts on this idea.

The lack of voting in my opinion is apathy enhanced by a combination of 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 above.  That and the fact that once politicians are elected they revert to the pandering of big business, big bucks and lobbyist.  Would be voters have a general disgruntlement in the political process and then you see the money poured into foreign countries while our infrastructure is largely neglected and New Orleans, the Mississippi gulf coast and Greenfield, Kansas are  left to mostly fend for them self.   Plus that general lack of concern for border security and illegal immigration.  The public needs to reclaim the government, limit terms and put in real people not career politicians.  But that is never gonna happen and apathy takes control.  All that and the fact that the American public is dumbed down by the media who is way  too concerned with the latest celebrity baby bump, or the pearls of Britney, Lindsay, Paris, Anna Nicole, Angelia/Brad and even Tila Tequlia.  It is a sad scenario, God help us please!  There I've preached today and yes even preachers are being corrupted today by big bucks and the gospel of wealth at the expense of the brethren.  hallelujah, can I have an AMEN.

Fend for themselves?  In the two years since Hurricane Katrina, the federal government has provided more than $114 billion in aid. Try pandering to BIG GOVERNMENT!

Oh no, the Government shouldn't help those people. They should have to buy a new house from Dogwood Homes. :P

In the words of the late Red Skelton, "There went another flock of birds over your head."

BTW, how was your yearly Christmas Eve visit from the Jacob Marley?:P

Before we start acusing each other with "Scroogisms," allow me to interject a bit of my own financial history.

Not long ago, with my current income, I was able to tithe to the work of my church, and make substantial donations of both time and money to causes I deemed both worthwhile and in agrement with my principals.  Then along came the politicians, who decided I was not spending my "giving" money wisely enough, and that THEY could spen it better.  So they enacted tax increases, in the form of increased income tax rates, higher capital gains taxes, taxing my dividend income, then re-taxing it as part of my income, more and different taxes on my cell phone, tires, gasoline, office supplies.....

Some of this tax increase was disguised as a tax on corporations; but that tax was merely passed along as higher prices to us, so we still pay that higher tax.

Pretty soon, I was no longer able to give above and beyond my tithe.  I have to work so much to pay taxes, that the time I was giving was limited as well.

It seems that if a program isn't performed by the government, it can't perform.  After all, we have thousands of federal employees depending on the existence of these programs.

Sooner or later, America will have to bite the bullet, and painfully restore many of the functions that were once performed by charitable organizations back to those organizations.

There looms a gorilla in the room.  The inevitable demise of the little funds remaining in the Social Security fund.

My vote will be for the one who STOPS spending like my money as if it is his.
