Intrepid engineers -
I'm hoping someone might have a good suggestion for a high standard, network-quality mic and/or array system to bring in a football crowd to the site mix. I've been using an Audio-Technica shotgun, but its very limited in its range.
Any suggestions would be most welcome!

If price is an issue, consider using a Zoom H2 as a stereo microphone. It has two sets built-in stereo microphones, one with a 90 degree pattern and the other with 120 degrees. It's got line out and a lot of other features intended for recording on an SD card. We've used them for recording live concerts and events with good results. We used one to feed live coverage of a conference. For the price I haven't found anything as versatile.

I asked the ABC audio guys at the MU-Texas game what they use for nat sound. They were using Sennheiser 416 shotgun mics for the crowd and band pickups.
They did suggest a Audio-Technica 816ST; one of the guys said it was about half the cost of the Sennheiser plus it is a stereo mic, with similar pickup characteristics to the 416.

Remember the Radio Shack version of the Crown PZM? We had one in Bethany and used it on the face of a press box with sealed windows (it hung from a nail). It worked well enough for crowd pickup until the sports guy left it there. It didn't survive the winter very well. 
I've never had to use crowd mics for the college games I've done at Iowa State, because the press box is sealed tight, and the university provides a house crowd mic feed along with a ref mic. At ISU hoops games I beg an effects feed from the TV truck, and they usually have Sennheiser or AT shotguns. One crew used a Sennheiser lav mic taped under the hoop and a gun aimed at the lane.

Thanks for the advice, all! Lately I've been running two seperate AT8035 shotguns from the booth - not the best, but not too bad either.
I'd love to run the Sennheiser shotguns, perhaps when I save a bit more money.
