(Not exactly NW Arkansas, but close) AM740 KRMG Tulsa begins FM simulcast
http://krmg.com/common/pdf/tulsa/Tulsa_Release.pdf
I'm actually a little surprised at this move. KRMG has been #1 or #2 in the market for years with just the AM signal alone.
102.3 is a 50kw C2 with a tower NW of Tulsa. It was a Christian Contemporary format until March 16 at 3pm, when the switched over to the simulcast.
If you're already #1 in the market (Fall 08 #1 with an 8.9), would adding am FM simulcast add to your sales potential (unless you were selling separate inventory on AM & FM)?
When I had a friend who worked there, he said that Cox would do anything to keep KRMG on top.
Anybody have any inside information?

KRMS in Osage Beach has done the same thing. They simulcast on an FM translator at 97.5. They are now branding it as "News Talk 97.5 KRMS...and AM 1150".
As much as I hate to see music radio stations replaced by talk radio, it only makes sense in order for talk stations to survive, develop, and grow in the future.
My wife was recently in St Louis and needed severe weather info. I told her to tune to 1120 or 550. "AM?" she bellowed. "I'll drive away from the funnel clouds".
What will become of the AM dial?

| With HD unfortunately we'll eventually see AM radio disappear. Many of us started on the AM dial(me on 1400 KTTS) and it's truly sad to see it go, but listeners want better quality and FM and HD will be the wave of the future. I remember lying in bed late at night listening to WLS or KMOX and marveling at the fact that I was listening to these stations hundreds of miles away. FM doesn't provide that, but it does provide quality sound...and ipods, mp3's, and XM are quality choices...unfortunately!

I also remember listening to WLS as a teenager. At the time (1980-1984), there were no FM stations that came in good here in North Central Arkansas that played rock-and-roll.

I listened to WLS as a teenager also, unfortunately it was a lot earlier than you. The 1960's
I almost hate to admit it, but I still listen to WLS. Only now instead of AM, I listen to their FM stream on the net. Better quality, Same Oldies, some of the same jingles, and some of the same DJ's. (Anybody remember Dick Biondi)

Another good station was KAAY 1090 KHz Little Rock the "The Mighty Ten Ninety." At 11 pm Beaker Street would come on for three hours that originated at the Tx site by the engineer would also was the announcer with underground rock music.

Speaking of "The Mighty Ten Ninety"; I once was there to bid on painting their three 500' towers. I was given a tour of the transmitter by the engineer at the time, Felix McDonald.
After a short while and him showing me various components of the old transmitter, it was then that I realized I was standing inside of the transmitter! Not the transmitter building, but the transmitter! It was huge! You would have to see it to believe it!
