On a recent trip to NE Arkansas, I picked up a station calling itself 1610 The Phantom.  It played a great variety of music from the late 50s through the 80s.  There was also a jock who seemed very knowledgable about the music.  However, I never heard a Legal ID or commercials for that matter.  I lost the station as I entered back into MO, so I figure it must be somewhere to the south.  I've checked the FCC Database and couldn't find it. Is this a pirate station?  Does anybody know anything about 1610 The Phantom?

I googled 1610 the Phantom and found nothing but Phantom of the Opera stuff.  I like the sound of the moniker and concept of the content.  Anything other than the blandness of most of todays formats attracts my interest.  If you learn or hear anything more keep it posted please.

With near certainty I can say you were listening to a pirate. As it sits now, no US station is licensed to 1610. KALT/Atlanta, TX was given that frequency in the x-band allotments, but for one reason or another they handed that license back in and kept their old frequency (900). There are a couple of 1610's licensed to Canada, but it's doubtful you were hearing either. So since there is no 1610 anywhere in the US, I'd say chances are pretty good you were hearing a pirate.

I'll be in Arkansas this weekend. I'll try to tune it in.

Where were you when you heard it?

I was in Paragould.  I heard it only during daylight hours, on 12/25 between 4 and 5 pm and 12/26 between 8:30 and 9:00 am.  I tried to listen to after dark on 12/25 and there was no signal.  Thanks for all the quick responses to the message.

This happens every now and then. Someone on these boards said they heard the DJ called Big Joe and Phantom 1610.

You see, a few years ago in that part of Arkansas, there was a big snow that was slow to thaw. A DJ in the AM 1610 station van was on his way to a remote. There was no heat in the van so his movement was constricted by is heavy coat. He saw a school bus sideways in the road and he hit the breaks. That’s when he found out the station was too cheap to fix them and he ended up in a frozen lake.

That, Mr. Diamond, was end of the DJ called Big Joe and the station van from AM 1610. I would bother calling the FCC, because they would think you were crazy. Just remember if you are in Arkansas again to be sure and listen to the DJ Big Joe and the Phantom 1610.;)

(With apologies to the late Red Sovine.)

Super Villain, that is a classic post...funny stuff...but spooky, if true.  I can handle DJ Joe and The Phantom 1610...I just don't want to encounter Pee Wee Herman's "Large Marge"...I think I worked with her once.

I suppose I could look it up but what was the Red Sovine Song...Phantom 309 or Phantom 409?  Old Red sure had a couple of tear jerker's the one about the little crippled boy and the CB radio used to really pull at the ole heart strings.

Phantom 309 and Teddy Bear. Warren McDonald played those quite a bit on KJEL. Nothing wrong with not taking EVERYTHING too seriously. Then again, maybe that's why I would enjoy Phantom 1610. Let's not discover it's whereabouts. Keep the legend and myth alive.

Happy New Year!!
