Driving home from work on New Years Eve, flipped to KWWR - Mexico. Sounded like they were doing a live countdown of the hits from 1978 (when the station flipped from beautiful music to country). Didn't have the chance to listen all night but they were taking requests and giving station history (tall tower, 2nd tall tower, studio tower collapse). Greg Holman and Gary Leonard (great to hear him back on the air after his medical issues this summer).
This is what local radio should be. KXEO-AM/KWWR-FM probably only one of a few single AM/FM station ownerships in the state.

KWWR & KXEO are a first class operation all the way - Gary, Greg, and the other folks are the shining example of what small town radio should be. I know when the weather is bad up where I work in Northeast Missouri, KWWR is the first place I turn to. KXEO plays all day at my office - a great mix of music and information - really a top notch operation for a 1kW AM on the graveyard frequency of 1340.

Many stations assume that their audience will be doing what THEY will be doing on New Year's Eve, getting schnocked. This is especially prevalent in Springfield, where downtown has become one giant bar.
We used to, long ago, have a live broadcast from the high school auditorium, with short radio shows featuring local talent, area bands playing single songs, lots of talk and production, and a final countdown at midnight, followed by the entire audience singing Auld Lang Syne. Lots of work, BIG audience, and tons of positive feedback throughout the year. Got easier to sell every year, too.

Hey moradio -
You don't suppose that Gary Leonard would be able to buy the FM in Vandalia before it's totally gone away, do you?
104.3 would make a great companion for KXEO, and with that reach it would be coverage from Columbia to Hannibal and many other points to the south if the signal were fixed right. It's just too bad that it's dark right now. Storm season is weeks away and those folks at KXEO would really have another reason for good local coverage if they just added that Vandalia FM.

Agreed that 104.3 would be a good compliment for KXEO - I'm sure they would have many more listeners on the FM band - it is pretty hard to pick up at night more than 10 miles or so from Mexico. I can't see Wachter selling it, though unless he has to - he has plans to turn it back on probably this spring once again simulcasting 101.7 at Elsberry.
103.9 KMCR Montgomery City would also make a good KXEO-FM - they are very openly for sale, and they have a CP to boost from 3 to 6kW - the signal is already good in Mexico, Fulton, and Montgomery, but the upgrade should put a good signal into Bowling Green.
I think if 104.3 were to end up in the hands of another owner, they'd probably be best to target Hannibal with it - the signal is a city grade there, and is about the same in Quincy as it is in Mexico; around 35-40dB

| Maybe I'm missing something here, but if "big coverage" is needed from Mexico, why not use KWWR? Or reactivate the frequency of the old KFMZ in Columbia? If I understand, 98.3's coordinates are being "involuntarily" changed to accommodate another FM's upgrade.

I think the thing that FMAMGM and I are saying is that KXEO would probably do better with its musical format on an FM Signal - and put the same kind of news/weather coverage with the AC Format on a station that can be heard clearly across the region 24 Hours a day to compliment their already very successful KWWR-FM.
I talked to Randy Wachter this evening - he says the station will sign back on in the Spring, simulcasting either 101.7 KLPW Elsberry or 93.3 KQQX Steelville - which just was put back on the air this week, if only temporarily due to a lack of operating capital from his banker/partner who has apparently soured on the radio biz.
He says he would like to find a buyer for the station due to its distance away from his other stations, but if he can't get what he wants out of it will return it to the air as a simulcast.
