KFRU has appeared to drop its Saturday morning 7 am newshour. The Women's Show ran at 6 am with the Outdoor Show moving up to the 7:00 hour. The KFRU newshour consisted of two 5 minute local news segments at 7:05 and 7:35 (hosted by Matt Weingartner), weather, sports and a couple of recorded features. Many times they covered late Friday and overnight Columbia news.
Unless Zimmer's KSSZ or MU's KBIA has Saturday news, the only local Saturday coverage (outside of possibly the regional coverage Moberly or Mexico stations) will be left up to the 6 and 9/10 pm reports on the local TV affiliates, as none of the stations provide local news during the local avails of the network's signature morning programs. The Columbia Tribune updates their front page on Saturdays and Sundays around 8 am, with the remainder at 10 am (their weekday update is at 2 pm).
It remains to be seen what Sunday brings, with a newshour scheduled for the same timeslot. The recently ressurected KFRU website has not been updated with the new schedule. The schedule change for The Women's Show was announced during last Sunday's show (it ran at 10 am on Sundays).

| Just shows you how things change. I grew up in Columbia when KFRU was the ONLY station in town and of course a major source of local news. Radio continues to give in to the Sirius and XM folks...just music. I suppose we (radio) are just to stupid to ever learn that LOCAL...LOCAL...LOCAL is the ONLY thing we can offer that the satellite boys cant do as well or better. Come on guys get with it...LOCAL is the only thing we can do to ward off these nuts in the sky. Maybe no one cares anymore...just cut expences and screw the listener...just make that profit.

One of the hardest things I'm having to learn in this biz is that its no longer about what the audience wants anymore - its about dollars, clearances and ratings-pandering.

This moring KFRU listeners have been treated to three hours of Rush Limbaugh's Week in Review, starting at 6 am, with a break from 8 to 10 to fit in the Sunday Morning Roundtable. A quick search (thank you, Wikipedia) of the net shows that this is a new weekend "best of" edition scheduled to be launched in January '08.
Is this being forced on all Rush affiliates? I guess KFRU couldn't get rid of three hours of another Clark Howard rebroadcast so they wouldn't have to drop news entirely.

| 10 minutes of Rush Limbaugh is too much for me....what a one sided, blind and deaf idiot. If the moon turned green tomorrow, he would say the Democrats did it. I hate one sided thinkers, right or left. That's the problem with our country today. Last edited on Sun Jan 20th, 2008 05:32 pm by XGM

There was a time not oh-so-long ago when 'FRU had news from 6am to 5pm on Saturdays (casts at :05 and :30 in the 6 and 7am hours, casts at :05 at 8 and 9am, and minute-long headline updates at :05 for the rest of the day). Sunday brought casts at 7:05, 7:30, 8:05, and 9:05 and minute-long headline updates at 7:50, 10:05, and 11:05.
I would say that it was Cumulus once again tightening its belt (Atlanta made them eliminate my 4.5 hour Saturday morning news shift at WROK last April because it was costing the company too much... All $1600 a year worth of it). However, I'm pretty sure that Matt was also board-oping the Saturday and Sunday shows... So, the body is going to be there regardless...
I can only think that it has something to do with having to clear this new Rush show, but I haven't heard any scuttblebutt about it in other markets. Has anyone else?
Makes me long for days of yore....

Thanks to the lack of news coverage on Sunday morning, it took until the 10 pm news on Sunday night to hear the whole story about the chainsaw attack at Larry Rice's ranch since I didn't get home after the MU-KU tilt until after the news was over and there wasn't a KFRU news report on Sunday morning. Some lady did call in during the Roundtable and asked about a chainsaw attack but no one knew anything about it.
And I heard Matt's name during the Roundtable so he probably still is doing board-op for it.
So now we have a town with more journalists per capita than anywhere else with NO local radio/TV news coverage from 10:35 pm Friday until 6 pm Saturday and again from 10:30 Saturday til 10 pm Sunday. At the same time the STL stations start their morning news programs earlier than ever seven days a week.
