Does anyone know the status of the frequency that the old KFMZ in Columbia used before its license was revoked?  I know the call sign was reassigned to a station at Brookfield, but am interesting in knowing what happened to the frequency.  Is it still assigned to Columbia?  At one time MU expressed an interest as well as several others.  I know the story behind the revocation involving Michael Rice.  His station at the Lake is back under a new licensee, however, I believe Rice still owns the tower, equipment and real estate.

The history of KFMZ is an interesting tale. I knew a few people who worked there in the late 70's. The general manager at the time was guest speaker at one of my classes. I didn't agree with a lot of what he said, but his techniques seemed to work.

I can't find the reference at the moment, but I believe their frequency was assigned to non-commercial educational status when the license was revoked. Since that time the FCC has not had a window for applications for such frequencies so it's still just sitting there.

Actually the FCC has just plain sat on it.  Its my understanding that at the time there were several parties (Al Germond and KBIA/Mike Dunn in particular) who offered to operate it as an interim operator.

Its also my understanding that Rice (Mike, not Larry) has threatened to sue (as has Mike Dunn) if it goes to auction.  The commission though has not given it to anyone and as far as I know its still a commercial frequency.  KBIA would have operated it as a non-comm of course.

I believe 101.9 (former KBMX) is about the only of the frequencies that is back on the air.

Do you know the coordinates of the old KFMZ tower and where the studio is located?  I'm assuming both are still intact and waiting for a new operator.  I believe Rice (Mike) still is the owner of all station assets.  The only thing he doesn't have is the license.

The old KFMZ studios are at Walnut, and Orr st. downtown Columbia. Look for the tower coordinates for K38II, or KZOU-LP they both broadcast from the old KFMZ tower near Ashland, MO.

Yes, I'm familiar with that source of information, but didn't KFMZ-FM exist long before the Ashland tower was constructed (9-1-97)?  If so, where was their earlier tower?

On the east side of Columbia behind Columbia Regional Hospital. Don't know the exact coordinates. I think a low power  TV station is using the tower, and I think KCMQ broadcasted from it for awhile.

I believe KARO/KPLA was also on the east side tower (off of St. Charles Rd.) prior to moving to their current northside tower off of Route B.  That tower also served as their Marti remote receive site.

Also, I don't think that 9/1/97 date is accurate - I think that tower dates from the early 90s, but I may be wrong (Mike may have moved from one tower in the Ashland area to this one).  I may have to see if there is a antenna registration number for the old STL tower on Walnut - it was put up for the link to the Ashland facilities (we all know what quality circuits GTE [tbe Great Telephone Experiment] had back then!

The current tower registration (FCC records) indicates a construction date of 9-1-97.  I know that KFMZ signed on a long time before that date.  There was a tower South of the Interstate on the east side of Columbia.  I thought that may have been the original.  KFMZ was a great station.  I was sorry to see it go dark.

I'm pretty sure the Ashland site was constructed aound 1991. Al Germond would be the person that could answer it for sure.

Chris Kellogg over at KPLA could probably answer your questions too. Pretty sure he was still working there when they increased wattage.

An application is on file with the FCC that would change the coordinates of Columbia's KFMZ.  D&H Media, owners of KOKO and KWKJ Warrensburg, is petitioning for an upgrade for KWKJ from 253C3 to 253C2, a power increase from 9KW to 44KW.  The application also calls for an involuntary channel change for KCHI in Chillicothe from 253A to 273A.  KFMZ's coordinates would change from near Ashland to Northeast of Columbia.  The channel, 252C2, would remain the same.  Apparently, there is still a possible future life for 252C2...if someone is declared eligible to be the licensee.
