I have never posted on any of the local “radio” boards, mainly because I want absolutely no part in the venom that is constantly spewed without fear of IP’s being made public.  But when words are put into my mouth, it is time for me to say something.

I am posting this message on Art Morris’ message board because registration is required, and no one can pretend to be me on this board, and I thank Art for allowing me to register and post here.

First, just how low can people be to post messages like “Thank God” when someone gets laid off from their job?  If someone is laid off from the Butterball factory, do you still say “Thank God?”  People have lost their livelihood, their source of income.  Wishing that upon anyone is pathetic.

For those questioning my “experience,” yes, my job previous to coming to KBZI was as a weekend talent in Pennsylvania.  That is not ALL of my experience, and I’m sorry you did not receive a full copy of my resume.

People on these boards always try to find the negative.  Low ratings, bad talent, and more.  Whoever loves to claim that I ran ten minute talksets in the morning show apparently only tuned in when I ran through the birthday lists every morning.  Whoever claimed that Thom in the afternoon did the “same exact show he did in mornings break for break” obviously assumed that Thom talked about Kenny Chesney and Country Fever on a Hot AC station.

Some people have posted that the music was all over the place?  Someone even went so far as to post the Top 25 posted on the old KBZI website, and point out comparisons.  Seether’s “Fake It” wasn’t a Hot AC hit, but the listeners loved it, so I played it.  But a good programmer knows how to make it work.  Some programmers believe that dayparting isn’t necessary anymore.  I believed it worked.  Other than the request-lunch hour, “Fake It” didn’t play during the workday.  Kanye West never spun before 7pm.  Digital Underground played maybe once a month outside of requests, and the target demo knows the song well.  Sandi Thom was a novelty hit that spun some big requests and got put to sleep in the music library.  Shane Duling is a local artist with a big following in the listening area.  The Cure and Cake?  Twenty and Thirty-somethings grew up with both and both get played on Hot AC nationwide.  Go down to Pitt State and play “The Distance” and see how many college kids sing along.  It’s just too bad they’re not counted in the ratings.  People who question the flow of the station can also try to explain how KBZI routinely had one of the best “Time Spent Per Tune-In” times in the market.

Whoever thinks that an outdated website is the result of a bad PD has obviously never worked in a small market, or has an axe to grind.  When no true in-house web guy is employed, many people are covering many different areas.  I would have loved to become move web-interactive, and attempted to do so with the tools that I had.  Unfortunately, other duties were more important, and the website suffered from lack of time.

But finally… whoever has claimed to have “talked to me” and that I said the station “should be a jukebox” with “no set plan” has gone too far.  That is flat out putting words in my mouth that I didn’t say.  No PD… no matter how inexperienced they may be… would EVER say that a station should have “no set plan.”  KBZI had a set plan, and was on the upswing.  Look at the final ratings book for the station.  I never received access to the full numbers… so let’s have a lesson in semi-accurate Arbitron math.  The station jumped to a 2.8 with persons 12+ (useless #s to sell, but what’s public.)  Arbitron in the small markets averages the latest two books together, so in a not-quite-mathematically accurate calculation, KBZI may have pulled numbers somewhere in the 3.5-4.0 range.  Again, that’s only 12+ numbers, which are useless for selling anyway.

All of that being said, sure, I learned a lot in my time there, and I’ll always be extremely grateful for the folks at KKOW/KBZI for taking me in, someone from the outside and making it feel like home.  Radio is a business and I completely understand how and why it ended.  The station was always a tough sell, had a marginal signal, and little help to promote it.  It had everything going against it, but still found a way to have a loyal listenership.

This WILL be my only post, and any posts using my name, or stating that I “said something” are complete fabrications by someone with an axe to grind and a little too much time on their hands, and I hope somebody will direct them to this post to show that it truly is not me.

In a time when the radio industry needs people pulling together to stop the bleeding of numbers, those who post on this board show only the worst side.  I, in no way believe the posters on this board represent anywhere near the majority of those in Joplin and Pittsburg, but they are so adamant to make entire local industry look bad, and that is immensely sad.  Take the time, and your anger, and focus it on your show if you’re still employed, or your cover letter if you’re not.  Make radio better for the listeners, before they get tired and go somewhere else.

Did you hear that, Beej?

That was the sound of APPLAUSE.  Well done.
