Home sick today. I enjoy listening to Dave Ramsay, and after coming out of the bottom of the 3:30 break, the programming changed from Dave to some off-the-wall stuff that made no sense. Never could figure out who it was. This goes on for at least 5 minutes.
Called the station office line (since obviously no one is in the studio monitoring the station), press 5 for the market manager (there is no working zero-out operator, and yes you get to voice mail jail), and miracle of miracles, the guy answers. Tell him his KFRU station is screwed up, says he'll check on it. Takes about 2-3 minutes, and one short reversion to the previous program before Ramsey's programming is restored.
Within the last week or so KFRU had Rush Limbaugh's show screwed up too, playing commercial inventory on top of the program for 5-10 minutes.
Ok, this is prime programming in a major listening daypart. Does anyone there even listen to their product???? Stations I've been in have always had monitor speakers in their reception area and offices for their stations - are they writing off KFRU? Or do they not care? Or is there anyone left in the building?
These are not isolated incidents. Last night (Sunday) the station was dead for an hour or two; nightly, the midnight ABC broadcasts get cut-off for a minute or so about a minute in. You have to wonder how you can sell a station to advertisers when you do such a good job of turning them off!

Wouldn't think so at 3:30 in the afternoon...
Its not that I like, or dislike, the product they put on. Its the continuing operational mistakes (that I don't see in other operations) that are running what was once a well operated station into the ground.

Its what happens when:
Board-ops are eliminated as a necessary expense,
The handful of remaining employees are too overwhelmed playing Russian Roulette with corporate management,
The big boys in Atlanta couldn't care less about their product - their only concern is delaying bankrupcy and putting as much cash in their pockets until that day inevitably comes.

KFRU used to be "the" station to tune to for information and news. But that was back in the days when live people did live shows.
It's so easy to automate and forget to monitor the air signal for problems or have other tasks that distract you. Or just not really care. Has radio gotten so bad that what staff is left can't stand to listen to their own station?
I know a lot of people don't think the public notices technical problems, but I don't agree with them. In a way it is disrespectful of the listeners, not just the advertisers.
A few weeks ago I heard an obviously overworked person interrupt the music at one station of a group of stations operated from the same location. At first I was amused, but later I just felt sorry for the guy. I won't mention call letters but:
"This is a severe weather bulletin from K (3 second pause) XXX." At least he was trying.

What a shame. I grew up in Columbia when KFRU was the ONLY Radio station in town...they "owned' the market for sure. Then came 1580 AM (then KBIA) Jan 1, 1955. I started my first radio job selling for them Feb 1, 1955. How things have changed. I don't know when FM took the lead over AM in Columbia but in Springfield it was 1976 when FM actually beat out AM stations.
Sorry to hear about KFRU's automation screwups. I have never liked automation of any kind. In my book Radio should be live 24/7 or go off the air.
