I want to thank everyone who had nice things to say about my days as host of "Cracker Barrel Time" (the correct title of the show when I did it) all those years ago.

I'm proud to say we had a 65 share on Sunday mornings, across a diversity of demos, and I like to believe that it was because we were the only show on from 7am-9am on Sundays that wasn't automated music or religious programming (live or taped) or.

My philosophy was to play "Devil's Advocate" to whoever called, regardless of their point of view or political beliefs. Because the Ozarks was -- and is -- predominantly conservative, that often positioned me on the left side of the political spectrum. But it always made for a lively, interesting conversation. Or at least that was the goal.

Hosting the program the way I chose to host it produced considerable personal hardship. On one hand, I had a female stalker who didn't back off until the FBI got involved in the investigation. (There will no doubt be those who scoff at that assertion. But I assure you, it is true.) On the other hand, I was asked on the air on numerous occasions about my private, personal life. (These were questions that the questioners would freak out about if I had asked them.)

I take no position on the current host of the show. I haven't been back to Springfield in nearly two years, and I certainly have not heard him host the program. I merely say that it is up to each individual listener -- and to the managers of the host -- to determine whether he is good and/or appropriate with regard to the manner in which he hosts the show.

Agree or disagree, I urge you to listen -- more than just a few times -- before you make up your mind about the propriety of his style. I understand better than most what hosting "Cracker Barrel Time" is like, and believe it is only fair to demand that of people quick to judge.

They changed the name when they first took over ( Journal ) But after many many calls they changed it back. Cracker barrel is legendary and should stay the same as it was. KTTS would do good to bring back many things of old. Like scrapbook and other neat programs they had in the past. Is Country Crossroads still on anywhere ?

Wow.  This topic really opened the floodgates.

I received a private email today from a reader of this forum that was very unhappy that I expressed my personal opinion about Cracker Barrell.

I'd like to make the following points:

1. I did not necessarily criticize the current host of CB.  I can't even tell you who is doing this show right now.  I am talking about the show over the past couple of years.

2. My criticisms of the show are not partisan.  My only concern is about the format and presentation of the program.  I am a RADIO guy, not a political partisan.

3. My thoughts were motivated, at least in part, by my many years as a programmer and manager of radio stations.  It's all about the programming.   My thought about "baby formula and infant car seats" was taken from a defunct afternoon local talk show in Joplin.  The young hosts of the program were told by management to try and reach "25-year old women" as their target demo.   25-year old women don't listen to late-afternoon talk radio on AM.   Know your audience, and try to give them what they want.

Anybody that knows me personally knows that I am a fair-minded person and I recognize good programming when I hear it.   And, in my humble opinion, CB could be better.

That's my opinion, what's yours?

Hey Art, tell that emailer to take a flying leap through the hole of a donut.  Its your board and you can say what you want! Since you own the site and pay the freight democracy doesn't rule always!

I just have to remember that the written word carries much more force than the spoken word.

Apparently, my words sound far more forceful than I intend them to be. Two things I've never been accused of: (1) Being intentionally hateful toward any individual and (2) being a political partisan.

Like I said, I'm a RADIO guy. I'm passionate about our business, and especially what's on the air.

I need to be more judicious in my use of the written words.

From what I've noticed on this board and the old board, the talk radio crowd doesn't want anyone to critisize them. Remember Mr. Mike on this board and "Talk Radio Guy" and Ohplease on the old board. The minute you said anything against a talk radio host or the talk radio industry, they went after you like a pit bull on meth. I deal with the listeners at work. They are some of the most hateful and mean people in the world. They also believe that by listening to talk radio they are better than everyone else in the world and deserve more attention.

I talked to some of my collegues about this. There is something in the water or air in Springfield that makes certain right-wing/conservative Springfieldians want to preach and pontificate on call-in shows, in the LTTE section of the News Leader, city council meetings or anywhere there is an open mike. It happenes not just on Cracker Barrel or Morning Line but I've heard it on Sports Talk, Woody and Janet, etc etc.  I even saw it on the Facebook page of one of the local anchor people! He mentioned a poll about favorite musical acts that showed the Beatles ahead of the Eagles. He mentioned that he prefered the Eagles over the Beatles. Early post were people liking the Beatles or Eagles. Then came a rash of "I only listen to gospel/Christian music."

I think a lot of people feel this is going to get them an award or pat on the back. It makes the rest of us very tired.

Thats a new trend, the look back at history and put it in a FOX news slant. Its cool when VFW magazine does a heart warming piece ( read it at the laundry mat ) on the 106 soilders who died in Vietnam during Woodstock while the media focused on those damn hippies and the 3 who died "partying". BUT.. I guess there is not enough current stuff going on so.. Think about this Would FDR had gotten 4 terms if the media was like it is now ?? Oh hell no.. You dont hear much from the Dixie Chicks anymore.. how do you think those peace, love, anti-war Beatles would play in todays climate. The idea is and why they do this is to show its viewers and listeners how THEY HAVE BEEN BRAINWASHED BY THE LIBERAL MEDIA FOR DECADES AND WE ARE JUST NOW TURNING THE TIDE !!! Watergate was a myth Bubba.. Poor Nixon was taken down by the LIBERAL media DONT LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN !!!
