Didn't catch the whole interview with David Lile this morning, but it appears that Mark Mills has been appointed Market Manager for the Central Missouri Cumulus cluster.  Mills has been with KFRU/KPLA/et al, for about 11-12 years or so in the sales department.  Mark also fills in on occasion when David is out, for sports coverage, etc.  On top of that, Mark has been the game site producer the MU Tigers football broadcasts for several years.

I've known Mark for many years (longer than he has worked for the Columbia stations).  Don't know what happened to the previous market manager(John Walker).  But if Mark can keep the pencil pushers at bay, this is very much a positive promotion for the station.  I hope it works out and that he is given the time to correct some of the issues affecting the Central Missouri cluster.

Mark is a good guy! Congratulations to him! I know, if he is allowed by Atlanta, he'll do right by the Columbia and Jefferson City communities with the stations.

I agree!  Mark's a great guy, and I always enjoyed working with him when I was at Premier/Cumulus.  I also agree, though, that he'll definitely have his work cut out for him.  He'll have to do more than keep Atlanta at bay; he'll also have to find a way to run things right with a piecemeal staff.  A lot of good people were pushed out last year and never replaced.

First good move by the cloud since they bought mid-mo; Mark knows everybody in town, and I'm sure they'll all be glad to finally have somebody they can trust won't be gone in a year.

Truth is, I heard mostly good things about John Walker.  By most accounts, he was a decent guy who had the misfortune of being GM when corporate ordered massive cuts.  I always heard cutting staff like he did was very hard on him and that he hated it.  While some may say he shouldn't have gone along with corporate's wishes, they're not being practical.  Those people would have been cut no matter who managed the cluster, and he needed a job himself.  That, unfortunately, comes with the territory of being a manager.

The biggest problem at Cumulus has never been the people running things on the local level (though I can think of one exception).  It's been the people at the top.
