| I want to say the Bear happened in 1986 and lasted through 1988. I remember it being the X also, but the Bear was my favorite. I can remember listening all day trying to hear the song of the day but I never won. What made the Bear cool and there was so many reasons, first off US 97 had just turned into a classic rock station and wasnt the classic rock icon it is now. US 97 was Madonna and Duran Duran at one time. The Bear was the hippy dippy shop at the jean shack type station, I washed alot of dishes at Johnny Loos listening to that station. It just had that audio atmosphere and vibe and so many cool shows, basically what the Cave is trying to recreate type mojo. I think thier DJ's used to drink coffee at the Peppermill just off the square and the good ol record center ( where I dropped alot of coin) was where Quiznos is now. Lord, I am an old geezer huh. That should be a topic .. best 417 record store that no longer exists Spin Again, jean shack, record center or that one place on Olive next to that certain kind of bar !! | Record Center was my favorite and I did lots of business with Spin Again and Mad Platter. I miss those stores. The guys who ran them were nice too.

How is the River doing? Better than the old Z or not? My guess is it must not be doing much to move to needle if the board has stopped talking about it !!! PS. Salina desperatly needs better music stations. Its not good when the classic country station is our best station. Our music stations are the very definition of canned, vanilla and repetitive. I'm surprised they dont just get those Wal-mart starlight singers versions of the hits to save even more money. Just need One CD.

Too bad, isn't it?
I think I've spent 10-minutes (max) listening to The River since it flipped. Music-only stations just aren't my cup of tea.
Also, it's really sad that the best mix of music I hear is in restaurants. Big R's BBQ in Joplin has a spectacular 50's/60's music service. And, Mazzio's Pizza in Pittsburg, KS has a really good 60's/70's mix
Both are playing songs that you rarely hear, properly mixed in with mainstream hits.
Why don't we?

| I agree, music stations are boring to me as well. If they don't do at least some local news, then they are a loser in my opinion. Local news is the ONLY thing that local broadcasters can do that the XM and Siris guys can't. No wonder people are worried about those guys in the sky. LOCAL, LOCAL, LOCAL is the only way to whip them and local news is essential to survive.

I was enjoying the Fuddruckers music this weekend. Btw Art, they were playing The Equals "Baby Come Back" with a young Eddy Grant on lead. I've only heard that on the original RCA 45. I enjoyed hearing it out in public.

| The River is pretty boring. Same expired music, different station. I wish they would have gone 50's/60's or SOMETHING that this market doesn't already have 5 of. I guess the Arbitron ratings will only tell.

Musings on a Friday afternoon:
Bear, River, Bass, Star, Cave, Wolf, Max.....anytime you name a radio station after some kind of image or object, it's predisposed to fail....or at least not be successful over any period of time. The two stations in this town that have been consistently successful for the past decade or more? KTTS and KGBX.
I had to chuckle when I heard that Star was going all-holiday music before Halloween. If that's what they feel they need to do...then fine. But at least do it RIGHT! For now, it needs to be upbeat and secular! Recycle your songs! I heard "Ave Maria" today at 1:30pm on a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon. Who would listen to something like that?? You can almost hear the dials changing.....
No matter when you start with all holiday music, do it RIGHT. Unfortunately, it sounds like Star just regurgitated holiday music into their transmitter.
My most formidable competitor in Springfield was always XGM - and I must say he is 100% correct when he says "Superserve your audience, and keep it LOCAL!"

And I get this picture in my mind of Rex Hansen hugging the powers that be at MWF...What a great way to "force" people to test The River...Their music is close to STAR anyway and now those few listeners that STAR had will have someplace to go...and soon KGBX will return to holiday fare and another op for The River...Smile Rex...they're playing right into your hands!

For my money, The River would beat Star anyway. The music on Star is too light AC. River is actually playing some good stuff that hasn't been played on Springfield radio in years. I still feel they need some sort of air talent. They did this same thing with Poer a few years back - liners only. I think Power came up in the raitings because they have more on-air personality.
I realize I'll get some hate mail for talking about "devil's music."

| I've been listening to River. I love it! The imaging is good. Good production and the music is awesome! Way better than Alice's mix when they tried that format.

True. Alice never did get it right.

| Agreed on both counts...doubt if live announcers are in the offing though.

I'd think probably not unless all the other jocks are out, too. Unlike Delilah, John Tesh isn't format specific. There's a version of his show that just offers his "intelligence for your life" bits and has no music at all. So, you schedule your own music and commercials around his voicetracks and run the whole thing off your hard drive!
