Even I was kid when Mr. McKay was giving us the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat...those words are a part of Americana.  I heard that he winged that opening originally.  The Wide World of Sports was such a unique show and Jim McKay was so smooth.   His coverage of the '72 Munich Olympics is legendary.   I saw a shot on TV this weekend of him with a yellow coat and Peter Jennings with a pair of yellow pants, way too 70's.  I met both JIm McKay and Peter Jennings when I was at AFVN radio & TV in Saigon in 1971, they were both both very professional and polite.  The network TV and foreign correspondents would often drop by the AFVN facilities to use or editing equipment and up-link equipment...it was a thrill for a young kid to meet all those folks who were covering the war on the nightly news.

R.I.P. - one of the greats, he paved the way for so many.  He would be on the Mount Rushmore of sports broadcasters, if there were one.

Not to mention that Jim always recognized the contribution of his crew.  I remember when he covered the Winter Olympics in Poland, where a blizzard was keeping the ski jumping events at bay.  After watching the picture for a few seconds, he asked, "... but who's the brave cameraman and crew up there getting us this shot?"  They all walked out in front of the lens where he saluted them ... by name.

Nice when the stars remember those of us in the background who make their fame possible.....
