Last week Entercom trimmed payroll by eliminating a dozen or more jobs in KC. Friday it was Cumulus' turn as they topped that number of cuts. A sad sad day in the Mission Bank building...gone are Program Directors, News Directors, Production Directors, Morning Show host, midday and evening air talent, Sales Managers, promotion people, part timers and folks in every facet of the operation. The cuts ran wide and deep. It is indeed a sad state of affairs for the radio industry these days. Best wishes and good luck to everyone in the business.
Gone are:
KCMO FM ...Don Daniels (PD), Charlie Knight (Middays), Kimberly Justice (News), "The Traffic Guy" and no more weekend air shifts.
KCFX...Moffit & Frankie (mornings) Ken Snyder (evenings) and no more weekend arir shifts.
KCMO AM...Rob Trainor (Asst PD/production), Kevin Patrick (news director)
KMJK....Yvonne Daniels (mid-days) Del Rice (classic soul show) and Max Groove (smooth Jazz show)
KCHZ...Sweet Lenny (evenings) and one male from the Shorty and the Boys morning show (name escapes me)
KCJK...unscathed
Mark Andrews cluster Production Director along with the National Sales Manager, Chiefs Sales Manager, two promotion people and several others. I know I have negelected to mention other names. I would estimate that the company trimmed well in excess of $500,000 from the annual payroll.
I understand that KCMO FM and 101 The Fox will now only have live talent in morning and afternoon drive with no weekend jocks...seems strange to me since those were the two top rated stations in the cluster.
It is all very sad!

Cumulus just did the same this week in Columbia - ND and one host of a mid-morning duo just from heritage KFRU-AM. Check out the Mid-Mo board for the additional bloodletting that is going on in the rest of the cluster.

The cuts from Cumulus came to Topeka on Friday as well.
KDVV- KC (Barb) Garrett (the last morning show host of 3 to be let go)
KQTP- Radio Rich (Bowers) and Louann Fulmer (both morning show host)
KMAJ-FM Chris Gallagher (first of 3 morning show hosts that are there for now)
KWIC, KMAJ-AM, and KTOP all unscathed but already have limited airstaff

| Lee Reisinger from Topeka was also cut. He was an engineer. There no way that Dennis Eversol can handle all that.

I seem to remember hearing Cumulus Mid-MO engineer Lloyd Collins provided a lot of support to Topeka a few years ago. I have to think he'll have to continue providing at least that level of support to Topeka now.

| Lloyd left Cumulus three years ago. He works in Moberly now, I believe.

Thanks for the information. That goes to show how often I talk to my old friends at Cumulus! It's not that I don't want to talk to them; it's just kind of tough to maintain an active friendship when you're competing against each other.

Yup...CE of KWIX-KRES, and now also DOE for Goodradio.

NO ONE in KC will notice that all of those stations will be voice-tracking 75-percent of the time, right? 
They also won't notice when the next big storm dumps two or three transmitters (at different sites, of course) and there's only one engineer to revive them all.
Up my neck of the woods in Iowa, one group is using unpaid interns for their promotional staff (give 'em t-shirts and free passes to events, etc.) They're tearing up the PA gear very quickly...they don't take care of it, and I'll bet they don't care. It's not like they'll get FIRED for screwing up!

I dunno...my TV station's political reporter is married to the competition's political reporter.
Bet they have some interesting pillow talk...

I remember when I interned at KRMG and KWEN in Tulsa, and one of our news staff was married to a newswoman on KVOO. I can imagine they had interesting discussions from time-to-time.
I remember a friend of mine was getting ready to work at an upstart station, and he had a friend at the heritage station. He called his friend at the heritage station and got his voicemail. He left a message, and it was later used on-air against him.
Of course, having a full-time 8 to 5 job during the week doesn't help matters in keeping in touch with old friends who are still working in radio either. That was something I always hated about working nights, for example. It was almost impossible to have friends because they were at work when you were home, and you were at work when they were home. My friends who work afternoons also tend to be hard to keep up with for similar reasons, too.

| Ladies and Gentlemen, the beat goes on. Cumulus KC continues to trim payroll. In a second wave of cuts I personally felt the pain (besides lots of close friends being axed earlier) my hours this past week were cut from 30 a week to 8 a week...can't make a living off that.

| Play it again Sam. A third wave of cuts at Cumulus-Kansas City last week. Nine more jobs eliminated, only one on air shift, the rest in sales, and several assistants in business, traffic and promotions.
